Neither of these are NECESSARY, but they are AWESOME and will enhance your experience greatly.

For DVR capabilities (actual recording of video), get this: BlueIris [blueirissoftware.com] Their website looks like butt, but it's the best software. Free trial, otherwise, spring for the full version. NO per-camera licensing crap. I normally don't recommend pay software, but this one is worth it. Even works with USB webcams. SO MANY OPTIONS! It has a built-in webserver, so you can view all your streams in a regular browser.

For remote viewing, Android (and I think iOS): IP Cam Viewer Pro [hit-mob.com]. There's a free/lite version of this, too. So just check it out. Instead of connecting to each individual camera, you can connect to your BlueIris server, as well. Neat!

Agree, Blue Iris is one of the best software. It can support up to 64 cameras.

Anyone knows how to make the speaker volume LOUD? When I speak into the mic on my computer (with volume at 90%), the audio barely comes out of the Speaker on the unit. I don't want to attach ext. speaker if possible just to boost the volume. Any idea?

Bought this today from DailySteals. No tax and shipping. I had checked out Groupon,but tax for CA. Same with Amazon. I also checked out a couple of videos on YouTube from awkwardhamster before deciding on this model.

Sure - as long as you have full access to the internet, there shouldn't be a problem. You will have to configure your network hardware to point it to your camera (or blueiris server), and I think there are a billion tutorials available on this subject, so don't feel lost. I think this is the part that turns people off, but if you just take it slow and stick with it, you will get this camera to do some great stuff.
