Yes, you can. Gift cards are not attached to a particular handset. You can use it only for prepaid plans, though.

Assisted GPS = stand-alone GPS + cellular assisted fast positioning

For any android phone equipped with AGPS, it is possible to install stand-alone GPS app with offline map data (no data plan needed), BUT, the INITIAL satellite position fixing will be slower compared to using google map with cellular dataplan

Maybe and that's a big maybe, if you buy a $50 Tomtom USA app that supposedly is fully offline. Google has done a great job making sure there are no good offline GPS apps out of the million available apps so that 1. People use Gmaps so google can track them, 2. Carriers sell more data, make more momey and want Googles phones in their line up.

WTF are you talking about? Copilot, Navigon(garmin), TomTom, Sygic, etc. That's the same amount of choices for standalone GPS units. You can blame google for having a shit app store that people can't find them or blame google for not having 100% offline google nav/maps.

AGPS devices will still do a real GPS lock without data network support. They will just take longer. Real GPS can take up to a couple of minutes to get a decent lock from a cold start. Assisted GPS speeds this up by approximating your location via cell towers and then getting the hard GPS lock later.

This process is easiest to see when you look at a GPS application on your device that allows you to see its circle con confidence. You'll notice it starts out very big and then gets smaller as time passes. That is the transition from tower triangulation to real GPS.

Assisted additionally helps to speed this up by downloading an updated list of the GPS sat positions. Allowing the phone to get its hard GPS lock faster by knowing where the sats are ahead of time.


You can test this yourself on any AGPS phone (pretty much anything made in the last 5 years) by putting it in Airplane Mode and then activating an app that uses GPS (but itself doesn't need a data connection). You'll see the GPS lock be made in a couple of minutes instead of a few seconds.

Ok there are 3 more than the one I mentioned. Calm down. Its not just navigation, the POI list is extremely important and most of them dont have the same list as GMaps. How many of those can find the closest bakery that is currently open?

Just FYI guys, yes in theory that is true. In practice, most phones are coded to disable GPS without data. I worked very long and hard to try and get my Vibrant to get a lock, but it would not budge without data. It all works in theory, but in practice it's not that easy to apply!
