Advice on going back to school
I am starting community college this spring and I need advice. I have been a hairstylist for 22 years and never really went to college. I was at the same company for 19 years and loved it but there were a lot of changes last year that affected my income so I left. I am now at an independent salon only working part time with no benefits. The industry has changed in the past few years and it is getting harder to get benefits and a guaranteed wage. I would like to retire someday lol.
So now I am going back to school. The problems is I am not exactly sure what I am going for. I would like to learn some basic skills that would make me employable as quickly as possible. I wouldn't mind going to school for a couple years but if I could find a job before that and take a few classes here and there it would be nice. Realistically I am thinking a certificate is the way to go. There are two I am looking at. One is Medical Receptionist and the other is Office Assistant. I am just wondering which is going to benefit me more financially. I love working with people which is why I chose Medical Receptionist but at the same time I don't want to limit myself and Office Assistant seems broader and I wouldn't be limited to just the medical field.
Any suggestions on certificates or classes that will help me get a job? I am hoping my 20+ years of customer service will help me but I need basic skills too. I know I am not going to get rich with these certificates but a steady income with good benefits would be nice.
