Canon released a set of these "zoom lenses" as cups several years ago (at least 5 years ago), to be given out as a novelty gift to their CPS press photographers during the Winter Olympics. It was a gag gift, and it became so popular (after all, much more fun than a boring T-shirt), that for a short while, it was available to buy, too. Then Nikon did the same thing. It was just a fad.

I think pretty much all the ones you see these days are generic knock-offs, unless you score an authentic one on eBay.. The real Canon ones look almost identical to the real lenses. They are very well made.
