Update: Deal is now live, promoted on the Starbucks website [starbucks.com]:
Got a Starbucks gift card? Get $5 free when you join our loyalty program by 3/14.

We’ll give you $5 to register your card and join My Starbucks Rewards. Ends March 14 (new members only). [starbucks.com]
Starbucks will be offering a $5 credit when you register a card for the first time on a new Starbucks Rewards account [starbucks.com]. The promotion is set to run from February 28 through March 14, 2013.

So far, the promotion has not been publicly communicated by Starbucks corporate, but some stores tipped the offer last weekend during the now-expired promotion to receive a free $5 gift card with in-store purchase of whole bean coffee 1-lb. bag. (See images of informal in-store signage here and here.)

The details of the $5 bonus offer are still sketchy at the moment, but I verified the information at a couple local stores. One barista advised me of the upcoming promo when I bought a bag of coffee over the weekend. When I asked a barista at another store, he was unfamiliar with the upcoming offer, but after consulting a book behind the counter, he confirmed the promotion would be offered from Feb 28 through Mar 14.

I also contacted customer service via the Starbucks website to inquire about the promotion, and received the following reply via e-mail:
Quote :
Thank you for contacting Starbucks, I hope you are having a good day! Yes, we are having a promotion coming up where you can get a $5.00 credit if you are a brand new starbucks customer registering your card for the first time. The $5.00 credit should be added to the card up to 72 hours after your card has been registered.
Thanks again for writing us. If you ever have any questions or concerns in the future, please don't hesitate to get in touch.
Additional details will be posted when they become available.

how many can you register? is it 1 card per email?
Would like to know this as well.

Either way, if I can turn a $5 gift card into $10, I'm gonna give it a shot. In for 2...tomorrow!

Already have an Rewards Account, so I bought a new card, put $5 on it, registered with a new account/email. After I get the the credit, I will just use or unregister and link it to my main account, although not necessary.

so i already have a gold account and i bought 3pounds of coffee with the last promotion, im guessing ill register those three 5 gift cards to three different emails, giving me 3 10 gift cards, then i will use those to buy one new 30 dollar gift card and register that one under my current account. I know this sounds complicated but really, most of it will be done in 5 mins at my computer.

Those 2.60 gift cards that Starbucks was giving out last week to try the Blonde Roast can be registered. Hopefully it takes.

So this is only free if you already have a card (and it hasn't already been registered)? How very lame of you, Starbucks! Blackeye

Okay, so you can also use their mobile app. Unfortunately I can't afford a smartphone and the recurring costs that go along with it.
