Update: Deal is now live, promoted on the Starbucks website [starbucks.com]:
Got a Starbucks gift card? Get $5 free when you join our loyalty program by 3/14.

We’ll give you $5 to register your card and join My Starbucks Rewards. Ends March 14 (new members only). [starbucks.com]
Starbucks will be offering a $5 credit when you register a card for the first time on a new Starbucks Rewards account [starbucks.com]. The promotion is set to run from February 28 through March 14, 2013.

So far, the promotion has not been publicly communicated by Starbucks corporate, but some stores tipped the offer last weekend during the now-expired promotion to receive a free $5 gift card with in-store purchase of whole bean coffee 1-lb. bag. (See images of informal in-store signage here and here.)

The details of the $5 bonus offer are still sketchy at the moment, but I verified the information at a couple local stores. One barista advised me of the upcoming promo when I bought a bag of coffee over the weekend. When I asked a barista at another store, he was unfamiliar with the upcoming offer, but after consulting a book behind the counter, he confirmed the promotion would be offered from Feb 28 through Mar 14.

I also contacted customer service via the Starbucks website to inquire about the promotion, and received the following reply via e-mail:
Quote :
Thank you for contacting Starbucks, I hope you are having a good day! Yes, we are having a promotion coming up where you can get a $5.00 credit if you are a brand new starbucks customer registering your card for the first time. The $5.00 credit should be added to the card up to 72 hours after your card has been registered.
Thanks again for writing us. If you ever have any questions or concerns in the future, please don't hesitate to get in touch.
Additional details will be posted when they become available.

Those 2.60 gift cards that Starbucks was giving out last week to try the Blonde Roast can be registered. Hopefully it takes.
I can confirm this works. I just did that and registered with a new account with the free eGift card and my balance is now $7.60 via the android app.

Call Starbucks and they will probably add the 5 dollars, just tell them the explanation from the store wasn't clear.

My friends who clued me into the deal had existing accounts and after a short call like I did they gave them the 5 dollars additional to their account.

For those that tried the Gmail trick, how does it work? Did you accumulate all the cards in the main account? Or did you have to remember the exact email dot places... nevermind. You'd still need to create separate login names...

You can buy egiftcards online for $5 and check the box that says you want to print it yourself. They will send a new egiftcard to your email, and you can register that.

Beats having to go to the store, and doing everything online!
