Update: Deal is now live, promoted on the Starbucks website [starbucks.com]:
Got a Starbucks gift card? Get $5 free when you join our loyalty program by 3/14.

We’ll give you $5 to register your card and join My Starbucks Rewards. Ends March 14 (new members only). [starbucks.com]
Starbucks will be offering a $5 credit when you register a card for the first time on a new Starbucks Rewards account [starbucks.com]. The promotion is set to run from February 28 through March 14, 2013.

So far, the promotion has not been publicly communicated by Starbucks corporate, but some stores tipped the offer last weekend during the now-expired promotion to receive a free $5 gift card with in-store purchase of whole bean coffee 1-lb. bag. (See images of informal in-store signage here and here.)

The details of the $5 bonus offer are still sketchy at the moment, but I verified the information at a couple local stores. One barista advised me of the upcoming promo when I bought a bag of coffee over the weekend. When I asked a barista at another store, he was unfamiliar with the upcoming offer, but after consulting a book behind the counter, he confirmed the promotion would be offered from Feb 28 through Mar 14.

I also contacted customer service via the Starbucks website to inquire about the promotion, and received the following reply via e-mail:
Quote :
Thank you for contacting Starbucks, I hope you are having a good day! Yes, we are having a promotion coming up where you can get a $5.00 credit if you are a brand new starbucks customer registering your card for the first time. The $5.00 credit should be added to the card up to 72 hours after your card has been registered.
Thanks again for writing us. If you ever have any questions or concerns in the future, please don't hesitate to get in touch.
Additional details will be posted when they become available.

Wow I'm so happy right now. Does anyone remember this deal from April of 2012? http://slickdeals.net/permadeal/71934/google-offers-10-starbucks-egift-card

I bought 28 of these 5 for 10 deals and since you didn't have to use a real e-mail i just added 01, 02, 03 etc to my normal email. I can still log on to all those google offer accounts and pull the e gift cards that I previously merged. I just registered the first one and I got $5 instantly! Another $150 free from this deal, glad I keep good records Smilie

When you merged the cards, did you register them first as part of the merging and then unregister them? I was wondering whether that would have any impact on being considered a new registration. I guess they don't care if the card has a prior history so long as a new rewards account is created. Did you have any funds on the e-card you registered or will they credit you $5 so long as a new card is registered even if it's empty? How did you vary up your account registration -- do they ask for mailing address and bday?

I never registered them, I don't think you had to to transfer money back then, not sure if it's the same way now. For starbucks registration now with all 30 cards, I use the same email but with a dot in 1 or 2 places so for example hgc@gmail h.gc@gmail h.g.c@gmail etc

Was the card that you registered empty or did it still have a balance on it?

Can I just go into the store and buy a $5 gift card then reigter it and get another $5?
Why not 50x$5 again? Is it a conscious thing?

Starbucks is the best, I hope they don't change their policies because of slickdeals abusers. Last week I was in the store and opened my app to pay for my coffee and it froze, I am a gold member and it would've been a free refill but the barista didnt know that. So he goes, sorry our app is not working properly, your coffee is on us. I was very happy Smilie

Call Starbucks and they will probably add the 5 dollars, just tell them the explanation from the store wasn't clear.

My friends who clued me into the deal had existing accounts and after a short call like I did they gave them the 5 dollars additional to their account.

Are you saying that using the offer in the proper way is abuse?
The deal was not explained to me at the store for a new account, just that the additional 5 dollars was for registering the card.

Check out the pictures in the wiki on my thread about the same deal,
The taped to the door piece of paper is at the store I bought my card from.

It doesn't matter, depend on how many cards you have.

This can be abused very easily, I just hope that won't be the case. I guess we'll see how far SD effect goes this time.

If i went to Starbucks and grabbed an empty giftcard, and registered it, would i get $5?
Or does it have to have a balance on it?
