BENQ W1070 $949 at NCIX

NCIX support is non-exsistant and returns are a big hassle.

Curious what feature in this outpaced the 8350... 3D?

3D, maybe a bit better blacks (it's hard to say) and much better sharpness.

The 8350 has better placement flexibility and doesn't suffer from the rainbow issue that DLP projectors have (which only some people notice). Epson's quality control is garbage though, so expect to take advantage of their quick and painless exchange process.

I'm considering a W1070, but I've read that they're kind of on the loud side. That would potentially be a deal breaker for me, so I'd only buy from a retailer that allowed returns without a restocking fee or shipping charges. I'd have to check it NCIX fits the bill there.

3D would be a big one for a lot of people, yes. Others:

Price - on average it is $100-200 cheaper. 8350 rarely gets below $999 and it's like 3 years old now
Overall PQ - w1070 is sharper, much brighter in best mode. Colors might be a matter of opinion but I much prefer the look and feel of DLP in general, black levels are probably similar. This is all subjective of course, but I think the majority of people would prefer the w1070 (slightly) in this regard.


IMO, the only advantage the 8350 has over this (and most similar priced DLP alternatives) is placement flexibility. Oh, and of course superior warranty and support through Epson.

So yeah... w1070 > 8350

DLP's great, until you move your eyes against a highly contrasted frame and see the rainbows. I can't stress that enough for first time buyers; make sure you can return it if you need to.

I don't know if I'd see them on the W1070 or not. I've seen them on DLP models with slower color wheels.

While I won't discount the existence of the rainbow effect, I think it is greatly overblown by some and generally should not be a fear for a first time buyer. And I certainly would not stress to people move their eyes across the screen to TRY to see rainbows. Once you see them, it is sometimes hard to unsee them. When you're doing what you're supposed to be doing, watching the picture, not darting your eyes around a black and white frame trying to find rainbows.

I've had 20+ people of all different ages into see my BenQ W6000 at 140" and many of them were curious about RBE. None of them seem to see it. And FWIW, the W6000 was considered below average for RBE, while all reports I read about the W1070 are that RBE is above average, i.e. not an issue.

It's not only when you're looking for them though. It just depends on what content is being played (unless it's a really slow wheel, in which case there are rainbows everywhere).

If you see them, you'll never not see them. That's my experience anyway. So if I saw them on the W1070, it would have to go back immediately.

I think it is something a new buyer should be wary of, so we'll have to agree to disagree on that front. The same goes for Epson's bad QA (which manifests in poor LCD alignment, a grinding iris, and a host of other things). Not that BenQ is perfect either (light leakage can be the kiss of death for a PJ, depending on where that light goes. I'd have to see it in person.)

Thanks for everybody's reply. After realizing the return policy of ncix, I backed out before it was too late. I was comparing this with 8350 and finally decided on the w1070. Certainly not considering with all the issues the Epson is plagued with. Then looked at the 3020 but it does not have any shift, even vertical. So back to waiting mode.

Where did you get that idea? I mean I think you made the right call not ordering from NCIX, but I've not gotten the impression the W1070 is plagued with issues.

Sorry I was replying in a hurry and meant the 8350, not the w1070. Looking at the spec and what it is, the w1070 is a pretty sweet price point for most of the non videophile consumers. Thanks for catching my error.

If you are still in a Amazon tax free state, then amazon has it for the same net price. 999 - 50gc. Otherwise just wait and you'll probably get it for 899 or 849 when there is enough supply. Its OOS at most places.
