I've known several people with the Motobecane bikes and they are pretty solid overall. Not only can you save money (more than enough to pay for a bike shop "tuneup"), you will also get better components (better operation and lighter weight). For example, this model http://www.bikesdirect.com/produc...ure_x5.htm has hydraulic brakes in addition to SRAM drivetrain for $500 shipped.
And your local Performance Bike shop very likely has some 2012 leftovers that might be good buys.
Last year, I bought last year's model bike at Performance Bike for a big discount. They will also price match if you find a deal somewhere else. I bought from Performance Bike because they are next to where I live, so it was convenient anytime I needed to make adjustments to the bike. They have lifetime adjustments if anyone is wondering. I'm not very mechanically inclined when it comes to bikes, so this was a big plus for me.
