Obviously Honda is probably one of the top generators, but don't throw Westinghouse under the bus they build solid engines since late 1800's and are in the US. At this price range you won't find another one that matches this quality and they come with 3 year warranty. Diesel is a lot harder to find during a storm with outages over more than a few days. At least around me not every gas station sells it.. |

But, if you have electric heat, electric stove, electric water tank then you are SOL with a small generator. I find it ironic that areas that are prone to natural disasters, like NC, SC, FL, and so forth have more electric than NG appliances... 5 TV's in the house with Verizon FiOS and we only pay $3.99/month to connect all 5 of them. Thanks to Ceton InfiniTV4 and CableCard.

Nuclear Power Plants use Diesel Backup generators for many solid reasons.

Just a quick comment on gas v diesel...
I spent 13 days post-hurricane Sandy w/o power and was thankful as hell to have a diesel generator. Gas lines were brutal for a few days. Diesel? Walk right up! Natural gas and diesel generators are a huge bonus in the event of extended power outages Edit: Oh yeah, still a good deal here! TU! Last edited by Chimay; 02-27-2013 at 10:29 AM.. |

This generator is made by WestPro Power Systems, LLC [findthecompany.com]. It is small privately held company founded in 2011. There are only 8 people working there, and $1.1 Million in revenue (not profits). They sell the same Chinese made crap under Westinghouse brand. They could be here today, gone tomorrow. If this is a CHonda generator, then you can find parts for it at a Honda Dealer, but I don't own this one, so, I can't comment. |

that was the same point i was trying to make a few posts earlier. Me personally would go Diesel, Honda, or Briggs Stratton , as a matter of fact Sears & Lowes has some nice Briggs at comparable prices |

If it gives anyone some confidence, I called one of their authorized service dealers (who service Westinghouse and Generac brands), and the guy was very high on the Westinghouse. I asked because I was concerned because it is not a Briggs engine or a Honda. He said it is a Westinghouse motor, not just a regular/standard Chinese knockoff like Harbor Freight or some of the Home Depot carried brands. Parts and service are very available. He said most time when there is an engine problem on a Chinese knockoff then the engine is scrapped. Trying to find parts is impossible. He was saying the Westinghouse engines are powerhouses and he has no problem getting parts or support when if there is an issue.
Checking Briggs on Lowes and Home Depot there are options. The Briggs at Lowes gets high marks, some cons are the crappy wheels that a few people had to replace and the placement of the spark plug (hard to remove). I think this is a deal for the price considering the very positive reviews on it...plus the 3 year warranty and service locations across the country. |

For those that are interested, you can convert this generator to a tri-fuel generator to use gas, natural gas or propane. The kit costs a little under $200 and very easy to do.

When it comes to generators, people don't realize that bigger is not always better. Bigger the unit, more fuel it would consume. The generator should be large enough to power the single largest critical device you may have in the house plus a few hundred watts to spare. And the most critical device could be the water (well) pump, electric heater (if that's the only source of heat) or AC(only if critical) For a longer power outage, there is no single solution to help you through. You need to have multiple sources for power/heat. A reasonable combination would be a Generator + Solar panels + batteries + inverter + wood stove. You also need to pick efficient devices such as top-loading chest freezer. |
