Feedback on AVS for this sub - sounds like there are some reviews on Amazon discussing some amp reliability issues with JBL subs. Don't know if it's specific to this model but wanted to chime in with the extra info for reading.

Ooooh I still need a sub for my Jamo 5.0 surround sound set. Anyone else own this? I'm split between buying a used sub from ebay or craigslist vs buying this. I do understand the implications of buying used electronics...

Newegg also selling the jbl studio 190 for 179.99 each. Are those any better than the jbl es80s?

I bought this sub a few weeks back when it was on sale for the same price. It is definitively worth $150. It hits pretty hard and sounds really nice on hardwood floors. I can crank it up and not worry about distortion since there is a built in limiter.

Bought 1. This was on my list since a long time. Thought maybe will buy after moving into a different house. But at this price couldn't pass on. I have Studio 190 5.0 package and this completes the entire home theater. All same brand...

This is $169.99 now. I've been experimenting with mine and comparing it to, mainly, my Bic V1220. The JBL 150P is a pretty solid sub, but it will distort when it's pushed enough. I give the edge to the V1220 overall. Maybe the V1220 can handle more of a load being a 12", but with the 150P being 300w and claiming to have a limiter to prevent distortion, I didn't expect this to be an issue. It will handle a pretty fair load, but not what the V1220 can handle.
I will say that the 150P seems to "thump" a little better than the V1220. Again, this may be due to the size being 10" vs. the 12" V1220. Last edited by MIX MASTER ICE; 03-04-2013 at 05:14 PM.. |

If the Onkyo TX-NR509 drops down to around $150 again @amazon.com, that one is worth a shot. Reliability is an issue and they get really hot if you run them at higher volume levels, especially music. It's a bitter sweet feeling I have towards Onkyo. On one hand, they aren't very reliable. On the other hand, the sound quality, especially bass response is great. Sound quality from the 509 blows away the Yamaha V473 I had briefly before I returned it. If you do buy Onkyo, get a little personal fan to keep blowing air into the vents on top. This makes a huge difference in the internal temperature of the receiver. Heat isn't good for electronics and Onkyo receivers run fricken' hot. |
