Just letting people know they should also have a a photoelectric smoke alarm in their house in addition to these ionization ones. Kidde has both a dual photoelectric/ionization alarm available (item code begins with PI) and a plain photoelectric alarm available (item code begins with PE).

Current code requires a smoke alarm in every bedroom, one just outside the bedroom area, and one on each level. Code also requires the smoke alarms be hardwired and interconnected. Kidde just came out with two wireless models: a wireless interconnected one that is hardwired and a wireless interconnected one that is battery operated. These let you gain the benefit of interconnected alarms without needing to run the usual interconnected wire through your whole house. If there is a fire in your basement, think how long it will be before you find out while sleeping in your bedroom two flights up.

As a side note, if you make any interior alterations to the house that require a permit, you must meet the new code for smoke alarms including the hardwired and interconnected requirements. So if you plan on adding a new bedroom or knocking down any walls, you might want to consider getting a different set of alarms.

When you go to install the alarms, be sure to read the installation section of NFPA 72 [studythecode.com] (it's an easy read) which tells you how to deal with dead air space.

Carbon Monoxide one is sold out...

If you are doing renovation, then the inspector may tell your contractor you must have hardwired smoke detectors which are interconnected. Barring major renovations, non-interconnected and battery operated smoke detectors are permitted and continue to be code in single family dwellings. Naturally, check your dept of licenses if you want to seriously remodel your home or rental property.

The battery operated ones don't need a permit and require no electrical work.

If you're replacing an existing hardwired smoke alarm with another hardwired one you might also not need a permit. In my town, they don't require a permit if a homeowner is replacing one with another.

Legally, unless you are altering the interior of the house such that the alterations require a permit, you do not need to install hardwired smoke alarms if you don't currently have them. By code, you should have them, but legally you are not required to (in most jurisdictions I believe).

I suppose a homeowner can do the work, but it won't be permitted and if there's an issue the insurance company will shut their door. So, again, I don't understand how HD can sell this stuff to homeowners knowing only a licensed person can install it. But I'd do it.

Well, the IRC says you need to update them if you make alterations to the interior. So logically, that means if you don't make alterations, you don't need to update them to meet the current code. And obviously this will vary according to state or local laws.

The average homeowner of an old construction will need to spend probably hundreds to hardwire new smoke alarms. I can't imagine anyone buying the requisite 6 smoke alarms and then still wanting to supplement it with battery operated ones. Better to spend the extra cash on something like AFCI breakers.
