But you need a permit anyways, and probably an inspection! I don't know enough about plumbing to know how you could mess it up, but it seems like it would actually take a bit of thinking to figure out how to ruin things for the neighborhood.

I would prefer to hear the alarm and also the indication of the location of occurring thread. They are already interconnected anyway. Personally hate these half-way regulation. Good intention but can't push things a bit further.

The Kidde CO interconnected monitor apparently talks to tell you if it's a fire or a CO problem, but I don't think it communicates this information to the rest of the alarms.

ok so can anyone point to a hardwired system of smoke/co 2 sensors? wasn't aware it was code and it would be nice to have my electrician wire the whole house at the same time

Kidde has a wireless option RF-SM-AC [amazon.com], but their wireless modules don't have a CO detector. I believe you can use all wireless interconnected smoke alarms, and then have one wired interconnected KN-COSM-IB [amazon.com] to one of the wireless ones, so they will all be interconnected and you will have a mostly wireless interconnected with one wired interconnected CO.

If you want to run wired interconnected ones through the whole house, use the KN-COSM-IB for the CO detection and then use many Kidde PI2010 which is both a photoelectric and ionization type detector. For just ionization detection, there is also the i12040 or i12060. You want a mix of ionization/photoelectric, and one of the types is more finicky around vapors from the bathroom or kitchen so you should look that up before you install them.
