840 is not good it consumes a lot of power and uses TLC NAND

Is this drive suitable for a 24/7 personal test lab? dual-xeon workstation 16GB ram running VMWare ESX with 5 or 6 virtual machines including an light use sql database server (sccm, dcs, other )?
The Samsung 840 MLC model MZ-7PC512B/WW is $240 more than this TLC model! I must have between 450 and 550 GB of fast SATA storage and VM boot time is very important as I will be constantly reconfiguring and rebooting VMs. I'm trying to decide between this cheap 500GB TLC and the more expensive samsung 840 500GB MLC model. Thoughts? |

Amazon's 840 page claims there is a newer drive and takes you to a Samsung 830 page.
Did Samsung release a new 830 series? |

TLC is designed for light usage models. It not only has the lowest longevity but it also has the highest latency. Your needs description sounds a bit more robust than that. The NAND may not wear out since this is a large drive, but the write speed isn't going to be anything to write home about. |
