NYC Subway Riders - Get your Metrocards today before the fare increase tomorrow
For those who don't know, on 3/1 the MTA (New York City's subway system) will be increasing fares [mta.info] to $2.50, up from $2.25.
While Metrocards are stored value cards (so you can't "hoard" tickets), note the following:
1) Discounts for bulk purchases (currently anything $10 or over) will go down from 7% to 5%
2) There will be a $1 surcharge to get a new physical Metrocard
I know this doesn't sound like a very slick deal, but if you take the subway every day, buying a year's worth of fares today vs. tomorrow can save you upwards of $130, which is a better return than any checking, savings, or CD account.
It doesn't make too much sense to hoard the plastic cards, as they expire in a year which will force you to buy a new card (and pay the $1). That said, if you have to buy new cards for a lot of people, better to do it today than tomorrow.
Just more of the joys of living in New York. I suppose we'll get a new tax for breathing next.
