I can't gather from the product details if this device is useful for amplifying your home's wifi signal such that the devices in your home experience increased reception, or if this device is simply for obtaining wifi signals on a single PC/device. In short, is it useful to "better" your home network, or only to better a single device's reception of any network?
TIA for any knowledge. |

Unless you're planning to create a personal hotspot with this on your laptop and crank up the Tx power. |

So can I plug this into my router and extend its range so all of my devices can connect with better range or is it for a specific device (laptop, desktop, tablet) that needs better connection (ie I plug it into 1 device and that 1 device has stronger Wifi connection capabilities).

If you want to do a before and after comparison and are using Windows 7 you can run this command from cmd.exe:
netsh wlan show networks mode=bssid That will list all wireless networks and provide strength in percentage. SSID 6 : Warehouse_13 Network type : Infrastructure Authentication : WPA2-Personal Encryption : CCMP BSSID 1 : Signal : 99% Radio type : 802.11g Channel : 3 Basic rates (Mbps) : 1 2 5.5 11 Other rates (Mbps) : 6 9 12 18 24 36 48 54 |

spoiler alert.....it will never output more than 250mw, no adapter in the US ever will as it's a restriction set by the FCC. A good antenna on any old adapter will do you much better.
You can use backtracks, a linux OS for hackers that can operate it at 1,000mw by tricking it into thinking your in south america but if you do it for long your going to get a knock on the door as it's a blatant violation of FCC broadcast law. The reason this unit is so popular is because it has the ability to inject packets into a data stream so one can brute force hack their way into a network. Most other adapters do not allow packet injection for obvious reasons. Last edited by fmjpower; 02-28-2013 at 01:11 PM.. |

I own this.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/...UTF8&psc=1 Costs $18.89. It gives me great range and looks better than the ALFA in my opinion. Plus, it supports wireless n 300mbit. Just throwing another option out there for people. Last edited by Chyaddo; 02-28-2013 at 01:09 PM.. |
