Buying a DLP Bulb -- Seems Like there are no reputable places. Help?
Hi everyone,My father's piece of crap Samsung DLP is having the picture go out and then turn back on. I'm assuming it's the bulb. Now I know it's barely worth replacing, but he wants it done, so if I don't do it, he'll hire a repair man, which will easily be $200-$300. ![]() I'm having a heckuvatime finding a DLP bulb that is guaranteed OEM from a reputable store. Even the websites that do the fulfillment for Samsung and Philips have low reviews. Where do you guys suggest I buy one? On eBay that's surely an "OEM equivalent" and may blow out in 3 months? Is there any place that has *manufacturer's* (and not a store) warranty that I can double with my American Express? All experience and suggestions appreciated with a +4 rep. Thank you! |

Might want to check the American Express thing, not sure if the warranty extension covers things that simply wear out.
That said, not sure if it is the bulb. I have a Mitsubushi and when the lamp goes it, the tv stays dark. No turning on and off like your description. Which makes sense, light bulbs typically only have two states, working or dead. Might be time to engage in some trickery with the old man. Tell him you googled the problem and talked to a Samsung repair person, and its a control board of some sort, which isnt manufactured any more . . . Oh hey dad, look at this tv on sale . . . |

Thanks guys! I found this store partstore.com which was bought by Best Buy which made me feel a little better that I have a chance of getting a genuine Philips bulb... But then I read their reviews resellerratings site... yikes. Why is there no above-the-board parts fulfillment center? Well, if they don't sell as described, I guess there's always a chargeback....
That's definitely an option... I just wish I knew about this during Christmas sales....

I don't know about genuine bulbs but I bought parts to fix my vizio TV from shopjimmy.com and their support was very good. Might be worth looking at if you haven't already

Reputable sources of electronics repair parts, used by many factory authorized repair shops:
MCM Electronics (same company as Newark Electronics) Dalbani Premium Parts Parts Express I would not use Fox International because they have delivered low quality chips, i.e., counterfeits. |
|
Do you have a web address for Premium Parts? The first main hits from Google don't appear to be electronic parts. Thanks for confirming my gut instinct about Fox International. Even though they do Philips' fulfillment, they seemed shady and their reviews were abysmal. |

I think I've used Parts Express and Tritronics a couple of times, years ago, both good. There's also a company called DLPLamps.com, which I learned about when I ordered a soldering iron from them, through Amazon. |
