An alternative is to use a $100 spare android phone as the baby cam - leave the phone in the baby room to capture image and sound. You get HD video (but no night vision), and probably better audio microphone. Install a webcam app on it to serve the images. Very portable. Good battery capacity. You'll have to use another phone to act as the monitor for you to see.

Having the android phone as the camera portion allows you to do camera-side event triggering. Install google voice on the phone, and install some audio monitoring program. Make the android phone call your house phone via google voice if the baby starts crying.

You can have the android phone act as audio source for bluetooth or wifi connected speakers (airplay and Android airplay), and pump the baby room audio directly to your home stereo system or computer room speakers.

This app actually has a feature to call a phone number when the baby cries. Not sure if you can make the call action do something else - to use the google voice over wifi to call instead of using the phone's dialer. Most likely, your spare phone won't have cellular service.

The other advantage to baby monitors are no-light conditions (ie sleeping) so you can see your baby even in pitch darkness)

I have the Motorola and love it.. had a cheapy summer unit before but was causing horrible Wifi interference; The motorola uses similar to DECT and doesn't conflict with my Wifi, for what its worth.

basically, I have an audio monitor in the house. When I hear the baby making a noise; I flip on the monitor from my phone, tablet , or computer.
