6121 is a bit touchy on the signals they have to be almost perfect or it starts T3/T4 ing.. A) get your cable provider out to replace the lines and splitters(splitters from the store are horrible) if you haven't done so yet. B) pray your firmware is updated promptly on their end. Aug firmware is running great by the way. Other than that it runs great after you have your signal balanced and within moto's small margin for error. |

I got mine from modems-modems seller (ebay). I offered $65 and was automatically declined. I raised it to $66.. It was not automatically declined nor accepted.. I offered $67 and it was automatically accepted.
I paid the $67 right away not knowing that he will also accept my $66 offer on his other auction. Well, I ended up having 2 orders. I contacted him that he will cancel the $66 offer since I already paid for the $67. He replied..

I tried to get TWC to fix the issues plaguing the 6121 for three weeks - they had trucks out no less than five times, I called them at least a dozen, nobody had ever heard of a firmware update. They ultimately told me that my problem was I needed to pay for a higher bandwidth cap and did nothing. Returned it, got the Zoom, and it's fine. I'm sure these Motorola modems are great for you if you have a good ISP, but if you have an intermittent problem with a crappy ISP god help you if you want them to do anything about it. From my perspective you may as well avoid the headaches and get a modem that handles crappy service better out of the box. Last edited by jnthornh; 03-02-2013 at 05:27 AM.. |

A couple of notes for folks interested in upgrading to DOCSIS 3.0 (sorry if these have been mentioned already).
First, your internet isn't really going to be faster, unless you're currently on a DOCSIS 1.0/1.1 unit and you're paying for a higher service tier. I can say with confidence that you're not going to make full use of a 4x4 or 8x4 unit any time soon. That said, you're going to get BETTER service. Your speeds will be more consistent. Second, as a followup to the first point, a lot of ISPs allow for "turbo boost" or "speed boost" or "power boost" or any number of other names for what happens when you do a speedtest or start a download and see speeds higher than what you're paying for. These speeds are only good for 10-15 seconds before you're throttled back to your tier. A lot of ISPs are not allowing for this on DOCSIS 3.0 units. It goes back to consistent service...you lose this "feature", but your overall service will be better. Third, the 6141 is an updated version of the 6121. I don't know the details, but 6121 models are occasionally (though rarely!) buggy. I don't know the details; Google it if you care. The 6141, in addition to having 8x4 channel bonding (instead of 4x4), is a more stable unit. Don't think twice - get the 6141. They're solid. Fourth, if your ISP doesn't list the 6141 as a compatible unit and DOES list the 6121, you can use the 6141 without any trouble. Tell them to run it as a 6121 and it will be fine. I was about to get this since my $30 modem that was given to me by the cable company just died. So I went to a local cable center to ask for a price match of some sort,
but they replaced it with the most expensive SBG6580 no questions asked and the best part is, this is for the cheapest $25 internet only service with no obligation. The only downfall is that they took away the free speed upgrade for some reason and my speed went down by half. |
