Got this last time. BestBuy had the worse packaging job ever; the router was loose in a large box, with a couple of air cushions thrown in which did not fill 50% of the space and therefore offer almost no protection. The power cord was loose too, and the router was pretty scuffed up - not sure if it was prexisting or scuffed and the power cord and router banged into each other during shipping.
I plugged it in, and, thanks Best Buy's refurb dept, it was still configured with the prior user's settings. BUT, I reset the router, clean up the scuffs, and it WORKS GREAT. Moral of the story: it's built like a tank, and even survived BestBuy's dumbest employees. Great router. Last edited by ph7; 03-01-2013 at 02:53 PM.. |

No experience with this router I can see. You have to cut and paste from a site that played with the router for a day and doesn't have an appreciation for what the average consumer wants in a router. You would buy this for great performance and easy to configuration. The easiest to configure router I have come across. You get it because it looks greats too and you know what you're getting. It has the features the vast majority ever bother with. |

Since some noob deleted this from the wiki, I repost it here:

http://slickdeals.net/forums/show...tcount=143 How do I know this works? I bought a router last time and did this. I have a full year AppleCare reflective of my BBY purchase date. I've also used this method for a used MBA I purchased from Amazon Warehouse deals. Same result, got my AppleCare coverage to align with my purchase date. ![]() You probably wouldn't be able to configure a real router, so you bought the right product. Buy it on looks, and pay extra! ![]() How about 3 stars from cnet and Dong Ngo, one of the most respected reviewers of networking products around? http://reviews.cnet.com/wireless-...49749.html "Limited networking features; picky support for USB external hard drive; only three Ethernet ports; no Web interface; no remote access for Windows users; supports only 50 clients; only OS X 10.4 or later can access storage feature." "The AirPort Extreme Base Station is a great wireless router for Mac or novice users who need something that's simple, nice-looking, and works well for their homes. Savvy Windows users will find many other alternatives that offer a lot more features for their bucks." Three stars from PC Magazine http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2...471,00.asp But yeah, cnet and pc mag don't know anything about consumer computing either, right?

That kind of sums up WiFi in general—ideally, it should work and be something transparent to the user instead of a constant consideration. I wager the vast majority of Airport Extreme and Time Capsule owners have no idea what 3x3:3 is or how to even check their physical link rate, and for the most part that's a testament to how stable these devices are. Maybe that's the reason why Apple doesn't make a super huge note about changes like markedly improving their WLAN connectivity. One thing is for certain, Apple's wireless division is either playing it incredibly cool, or honestly not getting the credit it deserves. |

And do note my comment was in regards to the loon who said "This is the BEST router". Its not even in the top 20, nor do I believe its in first place in any category at all. And my first reply went to the review on Smallnetbuilder, and the second included a review by one of the most respected networking reviewers in the industry. Not really 3rd tier reviewers here. I'm still cackling about the guy who said Smallnetbuilder doesn't know what they're talking about ![]() Good but overpriced router for people with a house full of apple stuff and little knowledge or interest in setting up an advanced router, but then again there are a ton of pretty simple, cheap, fairly stable routers with better features for those with more smarts than money... |

And those are just the devices in my house. That doesn't even factor in friends and family who come visit and connect with no issue. I've NEVER REBOOTED it. Ever! It's even on a UPS so when the power sometimes craps out it doesn't reboot. The Airport Extreme/Time Capsule is the first router I've never had to reboot. Period. The end. It "works." |

but our house, over the past 6 years, we've had the same ISP but different wireless routers... and i've never been one to mess around with "DDWRT" or "TOMATO" "firmware" (just know the name. no idea what they actually do). standard protocol = go to store, buy, come home, open box, read manual, follow through BUT almost without fail... some issue would come up inevitably within 1-2 months. e.g. i'll have to turn power off/on, make a call to my son/friend/colleague/tech support to figure out what's happening... again, i'm not tech savvy, but i'm not a complete dummy (at least i don't think). i'd like to think (and hope) that the routers of my past (Linksys, Netgear, Asus, Cisco, etc.) were configured correctly by me. i guess what i'm trying to say is this-- maybe this airport "EXTREME" (!!!) will be one that we could actually just plug in, go through initial setup (some Youtube guy claims "3 minutes"), and then be done with it (for at least 1-2 months!! ha, that's my benchmark). and out of the bunch of us in this house, i'm supposed to be the one that knows THE MOST, or at least is in charge of making sure there's internet for HW, for bills, for Hulu, for facetime, for etc. etc. etc. |
