Smartphones and tablets have hurt the console and handheld gaming market. I know my kids spend less time playing our Wii, 360 and PS3 now that they have tablets and smartphones available to play. Plus it's a lot cheaper.

Here is Nintendo's main problem: How many people have a Wii? A ton. How many people actually play it? Not many.

There's no buzz over the Wii U because the Wii gimmick didn't keep most people interested long enough. The price is going to have to drop considerably to offset the meh factor people associate with the original Wii.

I had heard that too, that the Wii had a really low attach rate (games purchased per console sold), but they're pretty solid.

Quick calculation shows:
Wii: 864 million games / 99 million consoles = 8.7
Xbox 360: 618 million games / 74.4 million consoles = 8.3
PS3: 595 million games / 73.1 million consoles = 8.1

It's probably fair to do some adjusting for bundled games, but hard to figure that exactly since various bundles have come at various times over the years. Regardless, seems like the Wii did pretty well over all, even if a lot of them were purchased just for Wii Sports.

Still gonna be a while before I get a Wii U. Latest news says they will be either showing pictures or a video of in play for Smash Bros in June.

I think the main reason for Wii 'meh ness' is due to how many of the people purchased it for the novelty factor and didn't get good games. Seriously, have you ever gone on craigslist and looked at the wii bundles for sale? The games people are including are awful. There really are some great wii games but people bought the cheapest games they could find instead of the quality games. Here are 10 games the wii has that are unique to wii and if people bought them maybe they'd still be using it:

Mario Galaxy 1 & 2
Donkey Kong Country Returns
Kirbys Epic Yarn
Zelda Skyward Sword
Sin and Punishment
Okami

there are so many more great games but people played Wii Sports...loved it...then bought Deca Sports, Ravin Rabbids, and Dora and the Snow Princess and wonder why they lost touch with it.

How many Uncharted games came out on the PS3? (Not counting the 2 on handhelds...just talking about home consoles)

So Sony releases Uncharted every 2 years or less.

That is 3 Uncharted games in 6 years with a 4th coming soon.

Now look at how many 3D Mario games came out over the years on home consoles

1996 Mario 64
2002 Mario Sunshine
2007 Mario Galaxy
2010 Mario Galaxy 2
Coming Soon 3D Mario

That is 4 3D Mario games on home consoles in 17 years with one upcoming.

So Nintendo releases New 3D Mario games every 4.25 years (not very often)

Just because Mario is in games like Smash Bros, Mario Kart, or Luigi's Mansion doesn't mean that they are true Mario games. They all have unique gameplay that is totally different than 3D Mario games.
