If people had to write a check for, or had deducted, 100% of their total payroll taxes (like us self-employeds pay), a lot of eyes would be opened and a ton of people would get angry really, really, really fast. |

Before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes. That way when you criticize them, you are a mile away from them and you have their shoes.

While it may be legal, it's reasonable for some of us to call it theft. I didn't vote for any of those politicians or laws that increase spending. I don't agree with a lot of the spending. There is not much that I can do about that.
Maybe I'll move to another country that's less screwed up someday... I've already lived in a dozen countries or so. Hopefully the dollar will still be worth enough when that happens. Right now, I still think this is the best country for me and my family. |

BTW - several industrialized western nations have mixed-payer UHC...you did know this, right? Right? So while Germany and France has mixed-payer systems, England, Canada, Spain have 100% taxpayer-funded systems. But you know this, right? If you didn't know, then what compelled you to post that nonsense above? Also, the US does have taxpayer-funded UHC - it's called Medicare. Funded in part by taxes and not mandatory, it is still taxpayer UHC. |

I only used this to make the point that living here and paying taxes is not slavery. You'd know that if you'd paid attention to the context. You're not forced to live here, but if you do choose to live here, paying taxes is part of being a citizen. Why? Because the american people SHOULD have to give something back for everything they get from the government. We can bicker all we want about the amounts or how the money is used, but trying to make the claim that paying taxes is theft or slavery is just ridiculous. Especially when WE'RE the ones who vote in the guys who misuse our tax money. No matter how helpful the feature, how easy it is to disable, or how good your intentions, someone somewhere will hate it and think you're a monster for implementing it.- Anonymous Developer

You may not have voted for them, but a majority of your fellow citizens did. That's part of living in a country where people vote. You sometimes have to put up with laws/leaders you don't agree with. And no, if it's "legal", then it is by definition absurd for you to call it theft. Is paying rent theft? No. You pay rent for the privilege of getting to live in your house/apartment. The same applies to the US. You are not forced to stay here and pay taxes. In fact, you're not forced to pay taxes at all if you don't make any income. |

Personally, I'm interested in keeping other people from building Utopia, because the more you believe you can create heaven on earth the more likely you are to set up guillotines in the public square to hasten the process. -- James Lileks

The fact that we have a binary choice is ALSO our fault. We could vote for 3rd parties. Hell, anyone who wants to can run for office and be any kind of candidate they want. |

Those that actually have a position that is carefully thought out and that they can argue to defend it are a rare breed, and we are truly the exception that can critically think things out. Most (or at least a large majority) of the people that vote do not even know why they are voting for the things and people they do. It's like an iphone; something that people do to follow the herd, that doesn't give them anything they really need and only go along with because it is "cool". I think it's a safe bet that people go through several generations of iphone before they understand even a fraction of the features and settings on the damned thing. The same with voting, only to am even larger degree. Of the people that do have some awareness, they tend to vote on one or two core issues. We've by and large allowed ourselves to be ruled by fear, and largely vote against the candidate we despise more than being able to stand behind a candidate we could genuinely applaud. |

Per putting up with what your neighbors voted for... "Democracy must be something more than two wolves and a sheep voting on what to have for dinner."
"In common usage, theft is the taking of another person's property without that person's permission or consent with the intent to deprive the rightful owner of it" [wikipedia.org] Speaking of absurd, you compared taxes to rent. On that absurd note, you should know that people cant take you seriously when you tell them that they are free to leave the country. That said, I have a lot more freedom and am much more traveled than most people. It's an option that's on my plate and it's something I may very well do. I'm not sure if I'll be able to escape the exit taxes, though. BTW, I actually do support many social policies and a more socialized government. I simply don't agree with all of the ways our current government decides to spend our money. Last edited by riznick; 03-04-2013 at 06:08 PM.. |
