Uncertain how this can be considered a slick deal. Nothing but bad news from the black editions, even with the updated firmware. And the company refuses to acknowledge such problems. Also, 30-60 minute battery life on such an expensive camera is a joke.

Though I agree with you on the battery life, it is so easy to buy two wasabi batteries for 20 dollars and have like 2.5 hours of footage total which is usually enough for a day.

I never experience crashing, and the picture quality is awesome.

I paid 280$ for mine, and it was worth every penny. I do hope that the company does osmething to address the crashing/battery life, if it is related to firmware *fingers crossed*

Now 280 would be a worthy price to deal with the awful battery life. The 400 they ask MSRP is just ludicrous for the issues the thing has. Holding out in hopes the rectify the issues, as I could really use a rugged camera to track my stupidity.

So I bought the GoPro Hero 3 Black Edition despite the negative reviews, hoping that I would be a lucky bloke that would get one that works with no problems. I was wrong. I unboxed the Hero, set it up, installed the firmware update and started using it. It worked for a while and then the problems began. At first it would just start freezing up while I was using it, so I would take out the battery, put it back in and then all was well. It finally got to the point that I would put the battery back in and it just wouldn't turn back on at all, so after a few calls to GoPro I talked to a guy that really knew what he was talking about, and once you follow the steps below, the GoPro will work like new. The issue is when you go to install the new firmware. There are two ways to do it, manually (where you have to enter serial number manually) or automatically (it detects the serial number using java so you dont have to enter it yourself). The man at GoPro said that when you let the computer automatically install the new firmware, java doesn't recognize all the files so the camera doesn't work properly. If you do it manually, all the problems are resolved, so here are the steps:
1.) Save all the pictures from the memory card that you want because we will be reformatting the card
2.) Put the memory card in the computer and re-format the card
3.) Go to gopro.com and click on the support tab, and click on gopro update
4.) Go through the process of installing the update, but opt to do it manually instead of automatically
5.) Once you have installed the new firmware on the camera, go to settings in the camera and re-format the card again

This should work! If there are any more problems, just give GoPro a holler and hope you get a good rep

probably not software, but hardware! thats why it hasnt been fixed yet. Oh and those GOpro commericials arent what the quality looks like. it has been shopped to look extremely nice so dont expect that quality. its false advertising

Not necessarily, at least judging by my old GoPro Hero Wide. A bunch of software issues with it turning off or black spot in the middle of sun on the pictures.
I think you are better off getting a generic one, at least if it's buggy junk you won't feel bad about ponying up GoPro prices Maybe they have improved now. But I was not impressed with the quality.

I got a Black back in December for $320. I've had it crash once, but ever since then it has worked perfectly. Just got back from a snowboard trip yesterday, I got 12 runs recorded before the battery crapped out. I did have the wifi on though, connected to the wireless remote. I turned the camera off during the lifts. I do think the battery life could be better, but the recordings look awesome, so clear

Get the 32 gb card. I just picked one up for my silver edition and it works perfectly. Do not get the 64 gb card! Everyone is having problems with that card and even gopro is recommending they switch to a 32 gb class 10 card.
