If you're considering the 60D, get a T2i (or T3i if you want the flip out screen) and some quality glass. The T2i is damn near identical in terms of specs and has the same sensor. It's also lighter but at the cost of durability. If you have time, but those newer bodys will more than likely be above that price range when they launch. Personally, I'm upgrading to the 6D since I've grown out of the T2i, but it's a damn good camera and you can find it easily for around $500.

how are your lenses? you get more value getting awesome lenses compared to bodies. Unless of course you're looking for better functions...

also, what kind of photography do you do? are you serious or just a casual photographer?

I have a 40mm pancake, the stock 18-55, and a 55-250. I shoot my family (duh), and shoot a lot for the MN chapter of Special Olympics, Law Enforcement fundraising so lots of outdoor runs, jumping into frozen lakes, sporting events, etc. I usually shoot manipulating the time value as to get good blur (say a foot kicking, etc) in an action shot etc. As far as my family, we travel a lot and I am their personal papparazi. This spring we will be in Bacelona and Paris so more outdoor, but landscape shooting.

Basically a hobby on steroids.

I have to get a new body because my XS wiggled out of my bag and plopped out of the trunk of the car, damaging it.

I'll also add that the higher quality EF counterparts to the 18-55mm (say, a 28-135mm IS) and the 55-250mm (70-300mm IS) will set him back another $700-800.

Of course, the 28-105mm f3.5-4.5 and 70-210mm f4 are gems that can be had for cheap. No IS for both lenses though.

I always advocate the tamron 2.8 17-50 non VC version for a great midzoom more to follow when I get home to type a better response
