If I don't care about recording video, do I really need the STM lens? I'm looking for the $699 deal with the 55-250 lens. (Amazon's price is close, but Buydig charges no tax.)

Its not just video or zoom lengths, its the quality of the glass. Its a great lens.

Trust me...It's worth the extra over the 18-55 for the 18-135. Otherwise it would cost you alot more later to buy it.

What would be the main difference in this over the Panasonic DMC-G3 w/14-42mm-lens for video or photoshooting? I'm mostly looking to do videos.

Another quick question... I'm going to be heading on a trip in a few weeks... Can you recommend a good zoom lens for a good price? I'll be at a sporting event or two, so I'd like to get some tight shots. (And for obvious reasons, I won't be able to get myself closer, so I'd need the zoom!)

Check the rules to make sure you can take dslr into sporting events. You'll need a fast zoom: canon 210mm will cost you over $2000, tamron will give you comparable quality for around 750.

At what point do the Nikons offer auto-bracketing? I have been getting some prints made but want to play around with HDR. Especially because I get a bunch made of my photos on wood through Plak That [plakthat.com], I think it would be a really cool look. Any info is greatly appreciated!

18-135 has decent zoom, try it out before buying another lens.

Not really. Just the nature of zooming a DSLR lens means you'll get hitches where it's not perfectly smooth. And then there is the fact that it's got a variable aperture...so, if you start recording at 18mm f/3.5 and zoom into 135mm, you're now at f/5.6 and the shot is darker. So, you have to make sure you start at an aperture you can end on.

It's great for getting a certain look, but, unless you need it, it's usually more of a pain to deal with

Not really. The newer 18-135 has some nice reviews, but, you'd do just as well with an 18-55 and 55-250 combo. And the $100 you save can go towards a 50mm or another lens

Well, for one, the Canon lens has a lot better range, both on the wide and tele ends. And in general, the Canon is better regarded for image quality, not to mention lens selection. Or did you mean the GH-3, because, then it'd be a slightly different story.

That said, if you are going to be mainly doing videos, do you need a DSLR? Do you realize you'll have to do a lot of manual focus and deal with a lot of limitations? I'd be sure you don't want a nice camcorder instead.
