how easy/hard is it to replace current thermostat with this? should i be turning off power from the mains in basement before attempting this?

It's a few wires, very simple to change out a thermostat. No need to turn main power off, just shut off the furnace.

I have never had an issue replacing thermostats but reading comments on this one it says if your thermostat uses batteries that this one might not work. Anyone have more info on this actual thermostat (any special wires need beyond usual ones)?

you still need a controller like the nexia one or the vera, if you want to use it as a smart thermostat, right?

My old thermostat ran on batteries and this one went in no problem. I did have to get to the furnace in the attic to connect the blue wire (the directions explain it all thoroughly) , but other than that it was just swapping wires from the old one to the new one.

Yes, you will need some sort of controller. This is for just the thermostat.

Anyone know if I will be able to buy 2 of these (on 2 a/c) and use it as a 2 zone system? or are there any z-wave compatiable thermostat for 2 zone? TIA!

Some Amazon reviewers note that they use Mi Casa Verde products like this [amazon.com]--which has no monthly subscription charges.

Take a look at the Radio Thermostat CT-30 or Filtrete 3M-50, which I think are the same and have wifi. I had to run a new thermostat wire to provide power (24V C wire). I recently changed out my wifi and the thermostat went back to adhoc mode. Unlike many of the reviews the wifi was simple as pie to install. My Brother 2170w on the other hand was a bear as the Win 8 utilities aren't up to speed yet. Back to the thermostat, it has a web page you can view and can even send commands. There are also apps available for iOS and maybe others. No cost for remote connectivity.
