My son has recently been asking about this. We still play Pokemon on the old n64, where you collect them on the gameboy and fight in the stadium on the n64. is this skylanders thing the modern day version? More importantly can an adult play or is this a dumbed down kids only version?

This game is pretty much like Lego Star Wars, but with the collection aspect.

I am an adult and I love the game, so is my husband and my daughter play it all the time. It's a money sucker though - if you get into collecting the characters. We just got Ninjini last week and I see that on Ebay she goes for quite a bit. This version of the game is the older version not the giants one but its really rare for some reason and it does go for quite a bit on Ebay. I had gotten one from KMAR on Black Friday for the same price $39, for the Wii then I found the Giants and bought it instead so I sold the Spyro pack on Ebay for about $60 at that time....and then my nephew said he wanted it, so I have searched it since and I am very happy about that price drop at this point.
Overall , to answer your question the game is very fun - adventurous and funny in a way ...and you don't need all the characters out there in order to complete the levels. One of each elements is enough

My son got Giants for Christmas. Aside from finding it used somewhere, is there any way to purchase the Spyro's Adventure game disc by itself and not end up with 2 portals?

I haven't seen it by itself without buying it used. Since it was the first game, you had to have the portal. I'm surprised that with so many people just joining in with Giants (especially with all the good prices for it over the holidays) that they wouldn't release a disc by itself. But it's also hard to find all the original characters, as well, since most places clearanced them out or put them on crazy sales over the holidays to get rid of them. A lot of the Giants figures can still be used, but not all of them, and not all of the original game characters have been re-released. With that said, I'm considering buying this for my son, eventually. I would rather get this than the new Skylanders: Swap Force. If you can get this for the same price as a used copy of just the game, I would say "why not?" I'm not sure how much used copies of the game go for. Plus you'll get series 1 of 3 of the characters (including Spyro who hasn't been released for Giants, yet). I also saw someone who came up with a cool idea for the portal. If you have a USB wall charger, you can plug the portal into it and use it as a light for your kids room. I'm sure my son would love having that for a night light. Not sure how bright it would be for that, but if I had an extra one, I'd try it.
