Lots of Bowie's best moments are slow and soulful, particularly "Heathen" and "Reality" (both from the last decade). Post 9-11 albums in theme, both of which are great listens, and "Where Are We Now" would have fit perfectly on either one of those albums, not to mention the albums from the latter half of the 90's. He's not Ziggy Stardust anymore, nor the Thin White Duke, or motown, Berlin-trilogy electronic sounds, or any of the other numerous styles the guy has done. It's more organic sounding and lamentful.

Why would Bowie care about recent generations? They need him way more than he needs them, and legends don't need to answer to anyone. I doubt he goes into the studio saying "should I write and record what I want to, or what the kids want?" (Actually, he tried that with "Earthling" - didn't work).
