Your first line was, "Apple deliberately obsoletes these things." Flat wrong.

Thanks for the laughs. A bunch of forum thread posts from crackpots with 2nd gen touches, with most people telling them not to be such an idiot about technology.
Meanwhile, almost every Android tablet before 2011 or so is locked into the OS it was delivered with. Not even updgradeable once. And how many old phones and mp3 players do most people have in a drawer somewhere? It's generally true that for super-compact technology, obsolescence is quick. If anything, Apple is better than most, when the hardware permits. |

It's a hardware thing. Seriously. This is the reason the iPhone 3GS (which I have) can run the latest version of iOS 6.1.3, yet the iPhone 3G is stuck on 4.2.1 with the iPod Touch 2nd generation. It has too little RAM (128MB, same with iPhone 3G) which doesn't support multitasking. Not to mention the GPUS and processor are probably way too slow to run the more demanding features of iOS 6. The iPod Touch 2nd generation is just too old at this point, hardware wise to run a newer version of iOS. The 3rd generation iPod touch however, they may just be deliberately keeping on 5.1.1, as it shares mostly the same components as the 3GS. Apple is known for planned obsolescence [wikipedia.org], so this shouldn't come as a surprise, but I presume the 3GS is getting the upgrades probably because some people might still be on contact from the "free iPhone 3GS" offers they had when the iPhone 4S came out, and the 4 dropped to $99. Apple only officially discontinued the 3GS last September. They were still selling the 3GS' for "free" on contract throughout 2011-2012, so they have to keep supporting it, until the next major release. In contrast the 2nd generation iPod Touch was discontinued in 2009/2010, and the 3rd generation in 2010. Last edited by dzap; 03-05-2013 at 03:42 PM.. |
