Nothing is wrong with them, they just wont be able to use the grandfathered plan.

VM policy states Starting May 27, 2012, if you are using the $25, $40, or $60 Beyond Talk plan and you upgrade to a Beyond Talk Smartphone launched after May 1, 2012*, you will need to switch to the $35, $45, or $55 Beyond Talk plan.

Thanks for the info, now to find a good deal on one!

Do you know if phones intended for prepaid will work? Like there's an LG Optimus V for virgin mobile prepaid on sale

http://slickdeals.net/f/5894558-LG-OPTIMUS-V-Prepaid-Phone-Virgin-Mobile-50-Free-Shipping?v=1

curious if that will work or if it's somehow locked into prepaid.

Thanks again.

Yes it will work
VM is a prepaid servce. The only phones that wouldnt work on the grandfather'd plan are their prepaid "paylo" phones and phones released after may 2012.

The opt v is a really good phone, although it is pretty outdated nowdays, it is one of the better phones for the 25 plan.

I have a first gen Optimus V that I rooted and used it extensively. It is rock solid phone, and supoerts teethering easily. THe speeds were also ok. I used Google Voice usign sipdroid + fring , groove voice etc and I got prety decent voice quality. GPS is also good. And I never had signal problems.

I never put any extra roms on it, jsut stock roam with link2sd to keep main memory empty. I merged new updates to stock firmware so that when ever i reset , i had prety recent apps.

If you are looking for a solid phone to use, i can vouch for first gen optimus v.
