Samsung 256GB 830 SSD MZ-7PC256Z $191AC @Superbiiz

This has a bunch of TD's... but this is the best price I could find...

If I'm not mistaken this has been on sale recently for as low as $150 but not sure if it's the exact same 830.

edit: My bad I was thinking of the 840 sorry.

You are thinking of the 840. It's newer but slightly lesser in various areas. I'm on the hunt for another 256 830 but $190 still isn't worth it. That being said and it being out of production it may not ever go lower.

The 830 is far superior to the non-pro 840 models.

Yes you are correct my mistake I was thinking of the 840

A bit expensive, but it's out of production so it's hard to find.

The only thing it's better at is probably the longevity. If you're an enterprise user this drive is good however at this price, you're better off spending an extra $20 (Plextor M5P) for a faster MLC drive with 5 year warranty (Look at the IOPS, it's what matters the most in real world scenarios).

I own both the Samsung 830 and 840 drives and hands down the 840's are faster than the 830's. Spending more money on MLC drive that is last generation (the controller used) makes no sense for a normal user because it's already outdated.

What is keeping the demand for the 830s so high that they're still going at these high prices? Why doesn't everyone just buy the non-pro Samsung 840 drives since they're hands down better?

I believe it is the fact that some people view an SSD purchase as something that is going to be handed down to their grandchildren as an heirloom.

Samsung is known for their reliability. The reason why is because people have the fear for TLC dying early. For the normal average home user this does not matter. For enterprise users this would matter (however if you're an enterprise user most likely you'd be educated enough to go for the Samsung Pro).

In a nutshell MLC lasts longer than TLC memory, however many don't factor into consideration the controller that's being used. Similar to how all manufacturers produce MLC drives but they're not all created equally.

To me I have had MLC drives die on me, sure the actual memory may last longer but what good does it do if the drive just die? Nothing. This can happen to any drive, I have yet to hear a TLC drive die from normal use (that's because it's still fairly new).

Why do people still buy a Toyota car over a Scion? It's made by the same company with a good reputation. TLC may be fine but why post for cheap parts when u can get better parts for almost the same price. As long as I can get MLC like a SanDisk extreme or other highly rated sandforce ssd for the same price as the TLC drive I'll stick with MLC
