I'm hesitant to buy a 3rd party lens, which is crazy, i know. I'm looking to find a really solid Tamron/Sigma lens that offers a better bang for my buck than the equivalent Canon. I just bought a used Canon 28-135, and I'm loving it. Would this lens make me forget the Canon i just bought?

I've used the 28-75 since I owned my DSLR and love it. I'd rather not be tempted with the abilities of the L lenses. To answer your question though, I personally am not aware of a lens where the Tamron/Sigma is better than the Canon. My take on it is that, for a much more affordable price, you can get a Tamron that performs pretty well, but not quite as stellar as a similar Canon. However, maybe someone here can set me straight. This is the most incredible price I've ever seen on this lens. It has been a crazy $649 the past year with a $100 rebate. There was an additional $95 rebate for college students which made it at best $449 and that didn't include the 50mm 1.8.
So don't forget the possibility of an educational rebate! http://www.tamron-usa.com/lenses/students.asp You can get an additional $60 back if you have a student ID from an approved institution (most are) making this bundle only $414. That all being said.... I would actually recommend the 18-135mm STM over the Tamron. IMO the 18-135mm range is sufficient for a walk-around lens and the Tamron isn't the best when it comes to image quality. I found that I don't often seriously use anything past 135mm (I've owned the Tamron before) and anything that I did try to take past 135mm the photos were usually not very sharp or impressive quality wise. So why should 98% of my images suffer from lower image quality for the 2% chance I may take a picture beyond 135mm which won't have very impressive IQ anyways? The 18-135mm STM is the absolute sharpest lens for the range it covers and the focusing motor is dead silent and allows for quasi-full-time-manual focusing. It also works with video autofocus in the T4i. |
