When it comes to Atheros chipsets and dd-wrt, my confidence level drops a little. I've seen too many things that just don’t work right, esp. wrt bridging. Case and point, the D-Link DIR-615 (also Atheros). Often on sale for $20, but I avoid it for this reason. But as a basic dd-wrt router, perhaps serviceable.

Even some high end products like the Apple iPhone, iPod, and iPad (at least the older versions) don't provide 5GHz access.
FYI iPad has been supporting 5ghz N since at least the 2nd gen. iPhone and iPod only since last release. Wink

I bought it last sale for the same price, nothing but trouble, it drops connection every few minutes, can't work with WDS, I was using lastest firmware, not recommend!

Please change the misleading title as the one newegg selling are NOT DD-WRT compatible. Most of us received v8.1 and no support since May 2012.

I own one of these, the range isn't fantastic - two rooms down the hallway we can only pick up one bar. I am looking to replace it with something else sometime soon.

OK price, but I'd caution folks on buying any N product that doesn't operate in the 5Ghz band.
Can you recommend a low cost/cheap/SlickDeal 5Ghz capable router that can run DD-WRT and/or Tomato?

Which dd-wrt file are you using for this router? I don't see it in the database [dd-wrt.com].
Search for "WR841N(D)" but watch out for the version. It looks like that only 3.x, 5.x and 7.x versions are supported for now. nod

I picked this router up last time it was at this price, hoping to get a version that was DD-WRT compatible. I received a version 8.1 which as far as I could tell isn't supported yet. If I am mistaken I would like to know which version of DD-WRT works with this router.
mine were 7.2

Sorry, I haven't done much shopping for aftermarket DD/Tom capable 5Ghz AP's. I did pick up a couple EA2700 refurbs for $40 each for some family members. Great little routers if you turn off the cloud crap. Dual band and gig ports at a throw-away price. I know some folk have been working on NAND DD images for the 2700, but I haven't seen anything yet.
