2560 x 1440 monitors tend to have a Display Port connection ( just use mini to normal size cable).
I would assume people who buy ThinkPads buy other expensive things like a 2560 x 1440 resolution monitor.
So, what you're saying is that you need to buy a dongle just to make it work with display port?
I would assume that if you paid this much for a laptop, then you wouldn't have to spend anymore money for basic connections like HDMI (or display port!)

Which one do you have? I have a T430 and absolutely loves the touchpad, in fact I've started using the touchpad more than the trackpoint!
terrible touchpad with or without latest drivers. herky jerky all over the place. my tiny r51 (old school) touchpad is a dream in comparison.
if you google "thinkpad rough touchpad" you'll see some other references to this issue. yes, i am aware that the roughness "sticker" can be removed on some models. users should not have to go to those lengths when using a premium product.
I just got an X230, and I love the build quality, the weight/size and the IPS display. Can't figure out Win8 yet, need to take some type of online training I guess. Might install Win7 and wait for touchscreen to use Win8.
The touchpad is atrocious, I might return the laptop because of that. But will try various drivers first.
Regarding mini DisplayPort, it's actually better than HDMI technically. Reasons are :
1) Can drive two full HD displays from a single port in various modes
2) Can drive a 27-inch 2560x1440 pixel monitor (HDMI doesn't do that on almost any laptop)
3) Can drive a VGA analog display natively with a standard cable (this one is not important for x230 since it already has separate VGA output)
So I agree that HDMI would be nice, but I plan to get a 27-inch 2560x1440 monitor from Ebay for $400, so I actually prefer the mini DisplayPort.
