Actually... You can play on Game Ranger and Voobly. I feel like there is a surprising large online AOE2 community considering this game was first released in like 1999. Some of the community even teamed together to release a third party expansion recently. It adds a few new civs and techs, its called Age of Forgotten Empires.
The biggest problem is that the game is dated, and Microsoft has not really continued support for it. I would imagine this rerelease will support larger resolutions (I think max is 1028x768 LoL) will probably be addressed along with the any Windows7 compatability issues.
Yeah any chance the improvements for Forgotten Empires will be included in this? Will they be compatible for online play? They really need to keep the player-base together. I don't play this but it sounds like there is still a decent amount of people out there playing online... and AOEO has disappointed me somewhat with its lack of features for PVP. It actually does have the great AOE PVP play but it seems like the game designers didn't make it easy enough to get a game together and put more into the PVE aspects. They need a centralized game browser system so that everybody that's playing PVP is in one place and you can join games based on skill level.
Seriously loved this game too. Logged so many hours. Now I'm a starcraft 2 guy... but I am going to check this out. Would love to play this game again, but will it have a backing? In other words, are people going to play this or are the servers going to be empty and impossible to find games? Starcraft 2 is great in matchmaking and finding a game.
AOE II was epic in its day, and still is.
AOE III was great too but just didn't have the "it" factor. But it did introduce some really great ideas for MP (the card system).
AOEO was a good idea but they screwed up the release and fixed it too late. PVP is still too underdeveloped but it is a fun game.
Rise of Nations was epic. First time playing it blew me away. Empire Earth was awesome as well, but the rest of the series never lived up to it. I'll never understand why RoN didn't continue (besides Rise of Legends or whatever).
The best time for RTS gaming was 98-04.
