Interested in the N5902 (remote) but have some questions.
Most everyone seems to like this remote, but I've never heard a lot about the details. How is the battery life, range and how does it hold up over time? Some of the posts in this thread have me thinking twice. Secondly, how does this remote compare to WMC remotes? I'm looking to get a barebones htpc soon and it includes its own WMC remote and IR extender (USB). Where is the N5902 better or worse than the average WMC remote? Between the fact that I've already got a Harmony 300 and will get the wmc remote free, I'm not so sure I need the N5902. However, this seems like the most convenient way to accept keyboard input (if I want that). Last edited by thetony; 03-07-2013 at 06:15 PM.. |

A Harmony remote sucks for running a computer. The other option is a K400 by Logitech for about $30 at Target. Re your htpc, you might want to consider an MK808, or the like, if you have a serving computer. I can't speak to battery life, but rechargeable hybrid batteries are the way to go. Imo if you can find a n5901 for around 25 buy that instead, the trackball is a lot easier to use compared to the optical sensor, its also alot lighter and slightly smaller, something i didn't know until i bought the n5902, having both i think i would rather give up the backlight and stick with the better response of the trackball and the lighter keyboard. oh and i get a good 25ft range on my n5901 and never had any problems with it connecting |

I tend to disagree with you on the Harmony point - I've read plenty of satisfied HTPC owners that are running with Harmony remotes. You just need to spend a bit of time programming them (guides are available online). Again, the one big thing lacking from it would be the mousing and keyboard input - for those purposes, you're not going to beat something like this, I think. I suppose it really depends on how you're using your HTPC (just UI/menus or more like an actual pc). Thanks for the MK808 suggestion - I've already looked into the option. For my needs, it won't come close to having enough horsepower. However, for basic HTPC tasks as a frontend/extender it seems very well suited. Might pick one up (or perhaps a Pi) in the future for a second display. |

I know this is somewhat nit-picking and it probably doesn't bother many other people, but this has been enough to keep me away from shelling out $35 on this thing. Also, looks can be deceiving, and I remember being under the impression that this was a somewhat full-sized keyboard rather than a "pocket-sized" keyboard. I have actually been waiting for a good deal on a Logitech K400 (somewhere around <$20, but still suffers from poor right shift key placement). Just my thoughts, that's all. |

The multimedia remote is great for home theater viewing if your pc is connected to a separate large screen in a different room. Also useful for browsing the web with its "trackball" feature, which helps scroll down a page. Certainly not good for typing, however...

My Mk802 II runs almost everything. I have the Mk808 on order. What horsepower do you think you need.? |
