It's an optional battery that attaches flat/flush against back (outside) of the Hero3. It has the exact same capacity (but different shape!) as the little battery that actually nests "inside" the Hero3. The little battery that nests inside the camera is a requirement for the camera to function at all. But the 100% optional "Battery BacPac" accessory attaches neatly to the camera back, effectively doubling the Hero3's total on-board battery life. That means you can (in theory, anyway) film twice as long without worrying about a battery change. Double recording time will be a mild convenience in some situations, and a huge benefit in others. Battery BacPac normally $49.99 discounted 15% to $42.50 using promo code ISLAND15 meets the $40 minimum order requirement for free shipping $42.50 grand total "to my door" is the best deal going anywhere for this item right now This is my third order with Island Surf in the last several days, and they've been handling everything perfectly. AWESOME! I just placed an order.
I ordered: GoPro Hero 3 Black GoPro LCD Touch BacPac GoPro Battery BacPac 2-day shipping Grand total: $450.50 I ALMOST bought this thing at my local BestBuy tonight for $399. With my local sales tax of 9.25%, the GoPro alone would have been nearly $440 bucks. For about $15 bucks more I ended up with an LCD Touch bacpac AND a Battery bacpac.
