Nice lens for crop sensor. Too bad no FF equivalent except Tamron 24-70 VC which is twice the price.

Does this one have any macro-ish functionality like the 17-70mm? I'm torn between the two.

Excellent lens for crop bodies. IMO, better than the Canon 17-55mm in all aspects except for color reproduction, but that's an easy touch-up in Lightroom. Even though I shoot full frame now, I'm amazed with the sharpness of this lens when I look back at the pictures taken with this lens. Also, with a 4-stop OS, I was able to easily shoot 1/10 handheld.

This is the one lens I wish they had an exact FF version of.

This is a great camera lens for Nikon DX line, at less than half price of the Nikon 2.8 lens (which does not even have image stabilization). I have it my self and it is super sharp at the center 80%-90% of the frame and focuses extremely fast, even wide open at f/2.8. This will make you wonder why did you ever use the kit lens. However, note that when auto focus is engaged, do not place your hands on the focus ring, you will ruin the motor.

OP should perhaps mention that this lens comes with OS (Oscillation Stabilization), same as the Nikon VR (Vibration Reduction) in your kit lenses. The Nikon lens 17-55 f2.8 does not have VR but is a better performer otherwise (focus speed/IQ/build quality), but at more than twice the price.

I've had this lens for over a year now and have never regretted paying full price. This is my go-to lens when traveling light.

That's what I'm using right now (non-VC) and I doubt it can be much better. The Tamron is just an excellent lens and insane value for the money.

A lot of reviews say the Sigma 17-50mm OS is better, but not by much. If you already own the Tamron, I wouldn't bother upgrading.
