Can this device be used as a true "laptop replacement"? Looking for something to get my son for entering college and can't decide between something like these windows 8 tablet/keyboard combos or an actual laptop. Main reason I'm even considering this kind of device is the S-pen for note taking and such.

These Hybrid Tablets can all substitute for a regular laptop. Even the ones that do not have a 1024-pressure sensitive digitizer can at least support a regular capacities pen so you can still take notes. You just won't be able to do detailed drawings since it's not pressure sensitive. So a Asus VivoTab Smart can work as well as this Samsung ATIV even though the VivoTab doesn't explicitly support capacitive pens; you jusst need to buy one for $2 off of Amazon and your son will be set to take notes using Microsoft Office OneNote or other note-taking software. The new Intel Atom chipset runs well; I can fun full 1080p videos side-by side, one in FireFox and one in Internet Explorer. It'll play old video games as well. I can usualy run Dreamweaver, Photoshop and 5 tabs in Internet Explorer and still only be using 1.6GB of RAM in my Lenovo K3 Lynx Tablet, which is nearly the same specifications as this Samsung ATIV tablet (the Lenovo is lighter, but does not have the pressure-sensitive digitizer support). It's a good alternative to a laptop if your son wants to have the power to run any Windows program, but still wants a tablet he can take to a friend's or use during commute. The tablet portion on this Samsung is only 0.2 pounds heavier than an iPad. The lightest and cheapest Windows 8 tablet running Intel Atom would be the Asus VivoTab Smart, which is 0.3 pounds lighter than an iPad. |

I bought one a few weeks ago and loving it. I take this thing everywhere with it....the battery is greattt and it doesn't heat up like other tablets. As far as the performance, I am not complaining. The resolution? I am watching netflix with now problem. I agree with some posts here regarding the keyboard...you don't need it.

The screen on the ATIV is much clearer and brighter, although the "black" level seems a bit off (tends to be more gray). The thing I really didn't like about the VivoTab is that the home button (Windows button) really didn't register about half the time. There are a lot of other reviews out there stating it, and you can try it yourself as most Best Buys and Staples store will have the VivoTab on display. ASUS refuses to acknowledge the issue. Also, by having a capacitive Windows button, it's very easy to accidentally touch it while using the device, which will boot you out of whatever program you are trying to use. The one thing to note is the significant difference in weight. The ATIV is 1.65 pounds, while the SmartTab is 1.2ish pounds. One thing to note is that the ATIV 500t's keyboard does NOT come with its own battery. Essentially, you're paying for a detachable keyboard that allows you to charge off of AC and adds USB port functionality (x2). Remember that these tablets are for ultra-light productivity work. If you're wanting to play video games on a tablet, you should find one that runs Android or iOS. If you want to do half a lot of your office work while traveling, then you might want the Intel Core i5 Microsoft Surface Pro. Competitors to the Microsoft Surface Pros will be coming out within a month or two. The most notable entry will be the Lenovo Helix, which will provide an Intel Core i5 or Core i7 in a 11.6" tablet formfactor around 2 pounds. If you have the money, I'd wait to purchase that "tablet". In all honesty, these tablets should be priced at $300 or below. $500 or more is ridiculous price-gouging.
