Not sure what the speeds are, but this 32gb is $15: http://www.frys-electronics-ads.c...lash-Drive And this 64gb is only $7 more than the OP: http://www.frys-electronics-ads.c...lash-Drive Last edited by riverstyxxx; 03-09-2013 at 10:15 PM.. |

If you think whatever you want to buy should only cost a penny, this is not for you.
If you think this is still too expensive for a USB 3.0 thumb drive, then this is not for you. If you are looking for a USB 3.0 thumbdrive with a good read performance at a reasonable price AND you have a paying job, then this is worth taking a look. The Patriot SuperSonic Rage XT's are nice sticks, not the best, but far from the worst. I have the 64GB version I got for the mid $40 range on a BF deal. For those of us that actually do have USB 3.0, they are very worthwhile. The speed can matter, A LOT. A large 3GB movie will copy onto one of these in under a minute, but would take 20 minutes (or longer) to copy using those slow ass drives you've recommended. 1 minutes versus 20 minutes? Yes, speed matters unless your time is worth nothing. Fast USB 3.0 sticks are definitely worthwhile for those of us with computers of the current standard. My only complaint about these Patriot drives is that the write speeds aren't fast enough for my preference. 50MBPS is nice, but there are some drives out there that are 3 times faster. When copying multi GB files, speed matters. Last edited by Larron; 03-09-2013 at 10:34 PM.. |

Actually, even if you have USB 2.0, you'd STILL WANT to get this. Why? Because most of the cheap USB 2.0 are significantly slower than what USB 2.0 can offer. Remember, this is a fast 32GB USB 3.0 device for $25. It will do ~180MB/s read and ~50MB/s write in USB 3.0 (someone tested it @ 165MB/s read and 45MB/s, but still significantly fast). But what happens if you stick it in a USB 2.0 port? USB 2.0 is 480mbit/s (or, 60MB/s), but because of overhead and QoS and etc.. you'll get a max speed of around 35MB/s read and 30MB/s write. So with this Patriot 32GB Rage stick, in a USB 2.0 slot, you'll get around 35MB/s read and 30MB/s write. Your math is quite.. intriguing. 10 minutes to fill up 32GB (29.7GiB)? So you're already assuming 50MB/s. If you had only USB 2.0, @ 30MB/s write it would take about 16.5 minutes. Now, let's check out your links: The first is the 32GB Axle for $15. Looking up reviews, it appears that (liberally), the average write speed on it is 7MB/s. Wow. Roughly 7x slower than USB 3.0 write speed of the Rage, and 4x slower than USB 2.0 write speed of the Rage. So to fill up that stick, to finish 29.7GiB it would take 70.7 minutes. Nice. $10 difference for 1 hour of writing. Hmm... The 64GB Duracell, however (although info on it was much harder to find), seems to have an average write speed of about 10MB/s. So it would take around 50 minutes to fill up 29.7GiB (or 100 minutes to fill up 59.4GiB). Also, you did mention 32GB MicroSD when you made that ridiculously unfair comparison. The fastest 32GB MicroSDHC cards could write @ around 18MB/s, but they are a little (or much more) than $25. Both the Samsung 32GB and SanDisk Mobile Ultra writes @ ~12MB/s is on sale for $20. (which puts filling up 29.7GiB @ around 40 minutes). So there you have it. Either this $25 Rage stick that you could fill up in 10 minutes (or 16 minutes on USB 2.0), or a $20 MicroSDHC that would take 40 minutes to fill up. $5 for 30 minutes difference (or 24 minutes on USB 2.0)? Is this a much better 32 GB USB 3.0 flash drive than the one that was listed for $13 after MIR on the front page the other day?

I tried the $5 Visa code. It takes off $5, but when I check out, it shows $29.95 instead of $24.95. I've never purchased from BeachCamera.com before. I wonder if this is a glitch. I've also never used V.me before either. I tried both a MasterCard and a Visa debit card.

That's the point. A flash drive like this can write that file in under a minute. You could write it to a flash, drive the flash across town and be back home before your cloud storage had uploaded 1/10th of a 3GB file over standard home broadband. Even for moving large files to my HTPC, it's a hell of a lot faster to copy them to a fast USB 3.0 flash drive and walk them to the HTPC than copy them using my internal network. The network is fast enough, but it's nowhere near the 50 MBPS of this Patriot. Some USB 3.0 flash drives can write at 190MBPS. A 3GB movie copies to them in 16 seconds. When you're buying this, you're not just buying storage, you're buying FAST storage. Last edited by Larron; 03-10-2013 at 05:27 PM.. |
