I purchased the 750 Gold and the 850 Gold both in the last month. Installed the 850 last week, so far so good. I am concerned though with all the "Coil whine" reports I keep hearing about...
I just hope both of my Seasonics are free from this "Coil whine." Finally, it seems to me the extra money for a "Platinum" rated Seasonic isn't really worth it in the sense it will save lots of electricity/energy costs over the long run. I agree, but it's difficult to spend the $100 now to save $5-20 a month (and on top of that you get one of the best quality psus around). I feel like they should do some sort of cash-for-clunkers thing for PSUs since it would save a lot of energy for this country. |

Here's the reality: The difference between GOLD and PLATINUM in energy savings is literally pennies per month...not even one dollar in 99/100 cases. This is a sad but true reality. Here are the facts that most people do not even know: Let's say you average a 20% load during a 24 hours period while using a 500 Watt power supply. The cost to operate difference between a 80Plus Platinum and a 80 Plus Bronze is only $0.02 per day! So that adds up to a grand savings of only $0.60 month, or, $7.20 per year. If these Seasonics do make it to their 7 year warranty period [and I hope they do, because I am using them], then the savings for a full 7 year period would be $50.40. I am a penny pincher [sent in over $6,000 worth of rebates last year alone]. So that is why I purchased the Seasonics after they have gone on sale...BUT there is a very small savings when comparing BRONZE vs. PLATINUM... the savings is so small, it is almost not even worth it in many, many cases... I will find the website that explains this so clearly and post it hopefully in a few moments. EDIT: Here is the eye opening website that explains the truth about the difference between the various Platinum, Gold, Silver, etc. ratings: Title: Why 80 PLUS® is Irrelevant to You When Buying a PSU http://www.hardocp.com/article/20...Tt9xcqbVWI Finally, another sad truth: many companies that advertise their PSU's are Gold, Silver, etc. are no where even near the specs to be in that specific category! Liar, liar, pants on fire...and hopefully your computer will not be on fire! Some of the better PSU testers and reviews [Johnny Guru, hardwaresecrets.com, Overclockers, Tech Powerup, etc.] clearly reveal that a considerable number of PSU's do NOT meet the criteria of the specific 80 Plus rating... Hope this helps you! Soar PS Please rep me for telling the truth...even if the truth is painful.... Last edited by soarwitheagles; 03-09-2013 at 10:43 AM.. |

Why didn't you get 80 Plus Bronze? |

If you are buying a unit that is not modular, than there is merit in your argument. |

A fantastic deal. I'm glad I waited around for it.
For those concerned with coil whine, Seasonic has addressed the issue with a new revision & suppressed "most" of the coil whine. This revision has been out for awhile now in response to earlier complaints. Some units may still be louder than others, but all current units should be much improved over those from launch. Check your box/PSU when it arrives to see if it's labeled "660XP2", the "2" denoting the newer revision. I'm not sure if a newer revision exists. I hope Newegg doesn't pull a fast one here, sending old stock (old revision) to us, or an open box horror story. I will RMA in a heartbeat. In my reading, supposedly the Super Flower by Golden King is one of the only PSU series which does not have coil whine. Personally, I think coil whine is limited precisely to your own personal build & how components are interacting with each other. |

Where does all that wasted electricity go? Does it just get wasted into unusable electricity? Does that effect our components since they are getting bits of unusable power? Also, that article states that 80PLUS is irrelevant, but within the same brand, like Antec or Seasonic, I'm pretty sure Antec's 80PlusGold PSUs are better than their 80Plus PSUs. Generally I think that the PSU had to use better parts/transistors/etc to get the 80Plus rating higher. I know the Seasonic Gold Modular PSUs were studs, but does that mean that this PSU isn't really better and is basically the same as their GOLD models or are these PSUs actually better? Anyways, thanks for the info about the real electricity costs. It makes sense because 80Plus means that it's more than 80% efficient at all loads, whereas Platinum is like 89-92%, and that extra 5-10% efficiency isn't that much of a difference in the pocketbook. |

I purchased the Seasonic Gold for all of these TEN reasons:
Hmmmmmm...well, now I feel totally crushed.... Just joking...and you can keep your rep to yourself. Ok, I will try to answer some of your questions...and I'll do it rep free... Now that is a good deal! Yep, a real genuine slick deal! Your question: Where does all that wasted electricity go? A power supply unit (PSU) converts mains AC to low-voltage regulated DC power for the internal components of a computer. A computer power supply's major job is to convert AC to DC. In the conversion process, heat is created and then must be dissipated and that is where the energy [wattage] loss goes. The energy loss is actually heat being dissipated.... Your question: Are the Seasonic Platinum PSU's better than the Seasonic Gold PSU's? Depends what you define as "better." If you consider 2-3% greater efficiency as better [and I do consider 2-3% greater efficiency as better], then the Seasonic Platinum PSU's are indeed better than the Seasonic Gold PSU's. Well, I have done my very best to answer your PSU questions...now do I get a rep from you? LOL! If not, that is ok, I suppose I may still survive...but I am not sure how I will ever catch up with Cali! ![]()
No coil whine yet in my Seasonic 850X Gold...now I hope my Seasonic 750X Gold will do well too! Soar |
