Is there really a huge difference between a 70-300mm EFS vs. this lens?

Is it really worth the money?

I would appreciate some feedback
It's a big difference...especially in lower-light situations. You get 2.8 at all focal lengths versus 4 to 5.6 in the 70-300.

However, whether it's worth it to you is totally subjective...it's a really expensive lens. It depends what you use it for. I wanted this lens, but I use my zoom mostly for softball where I'm practically on the field...so I went with a 70-200 f4L non-IS for about $475 on craigslist.

I could make a Gigapixel Camera cheaper than this thing.

Sure that is has no back/front focus? Pictures are looking slightly out of focus.
Thanks for the feedback. I'll do some formal testing.

Most of those were shot at 1600 to 6400 ISO with a 5D3 & f/2.8 @ 200mm or f/4 @ 280mm, so generous noise reduction was applied in Adobe RAW. could be a significant part of the softness, but it is definitely something I should look into before the warranty is up. Let's just say I loaded my cart with gear and put it before the horse and I'm still very much in the process of developing "the eye" for competent photography.

And y'all were right about getting more through eBay or Craigslist for used lenses. Got the offer from Adorama today and it's half of what I expected (and I thought I was being pretty reasonable in my own assumptions). Now to assess how much I feel like bargaining (something I typically suck at and hate doing. You can imagine how adored I was by merchants everywhere during a past trip to China).

Suggestion on convincing the wife that we have to have this for the grade school kids soccer games?

Thanks!

Might buy one just to make the neighbors nervous when they see me walk this from my car to a tripod in the upstairs window.

Unless they are playing at night, you can get the 70-200f4L for a lot cheaper. If during the day, you don't even need the IS version. I bought the 70-200f4L non-IS for $475 off craigslist.

1. The only 70-300mm Canon lens is the EF 70-300mm IS USM. It is a very useful EF lens but does not compare to the 70-200mm f2.8 IS, which you'd be able to take pictures at faster shutter speed in the same conditions.

2. $1700 is a bargain for this specific lens.

3. Unless you're serious about photography, or make a living off photography, you would not need this lens.

Since you mentioned "EFS" I'd assume you may be referring to the EF-S 55-250mm IS. In that case, it's a very good lens for $150, and should serve the majority of Canon consumer users well enough.

Lets also not forget that this 70-200mm f2.8 IS weighs 3.28 lbs, versus the 14 ounces of the EF-S 55-250mm IS. Completely different purposes even though they are both telephoto zooms.

Don't forget the better-fed twin of the 70-300mm IS USM, the EF 70-300 f/4-5.6L IS USM. Sort of a compromise of the smaller/lighter 55-250 or 70-300 and the 70-200 f/2.8 beasts.

That is supposedly to be a very good lens as well, but certainly not as popular nor as fast as the 70-200mm f2.8/f4 pair.

Speaking of rare lenses, the $1000 70-300mm f4.5 - 5.6 DO is supposed to be a dog considering how much it costs. Wondering if that's really true.

For outdoor sport - 70-200 f4 non IS at less tan $500 will be good enough.
I bought 70-200 f2.8 non IS for indoor sport . The IS model was not in stock. I was thinking to get the IS later. After 3 months using non IS model..I don't think I need the IS at all.
Local CL had on onsale for $1500. I almost bought it but didn't.

I have known people who have had this lens fall apart on them. It is a complex lens with lots of moving parts. This is one of the ones that can fail. Buyer beware!

I've heard that they were taking pictures of BIG foot too Smilie

I'd really like to try it out as well. From a technological standpoint, it's pretty dang cool how they designed the lens elements. But the review at the-digital-picture isn't exactly shining. But I'd still love to try it out.

The classic push-pull EF 70-210 f/4 is pretty neat, too, for a fraction of the cost of the 70-200 f/4L's. Of course you sacrifice USM and a non-rotating front element.

I rarely post but just wanted people considering this deal to know that I bought this specifically for taking pictures of 4 yr and 2.5 yr old kids in swimming/daycare/etc and plan on using this till they go to college.

And yes - I tried the other version f4 with IS - and while it was nice - it just did not do well in a very well lit daycare.

The other day I took this to the swimming class -and took pictures iwth 7D - O M G !

It absolutely is worth it...the pictures I got at shutter speed of 1/40 were mind blowing...so sharp you would shave with the pictures Smilie
