I might be a little bit bias because I think the G500 is the greatest mouse ever. It has weights in it (G400 doesn't) so you can customize the weight of the mouse to your liking. Once you use it, you won't want to go back to any other mouse. When you get the right weight and when you find the perfect responsiveness settings (Logitech's software), you seriously can't use a computer without this mouse. Its like an extension of my damn hand. lol.

The G500 was meant to replace the G5, so if your G5 is still working decently, there isn't much reason to replace it.
