Honestly, it is WELL worth it.

As much as Google and other companies keep pushing "cloud cloud cloud" there's a lot to be said about working with real apps that are connected to the cloud. It's the traditional "client/server" model that's been the basis of computing for decades, except that the server stuff has left the building and it's available for you and I to subscribe to at a reasonable price. (trust me, the skillset to manage servers, much less the hardware and licenses do NOT come cheaply.)

There is no practical reason to use Office 2010 over 2013. All the files are exactly the same. Office 2013 has some nice new features, will connect better and more easily to Skydrive and Sharepoint online (business), and so on. But at the end of the day Office is still Office and you can use it just fine for your class. (Unless the class is "Intro to Office 2010" anyway.)
