What flash are you hoping for? Flashes are more of a specialty item, whereas this is a lens that many more people will use. Yeah, there are some people that really just don't factor in the value of their time. They'll spend 2 months of searching just to save what they'd earn in less than 10 minutes of work.

Lol I would have bought it from Amazon for the same price. I wanted to wait for them because I know these Sigmas aren't exactly steller for QC so amazon return policy is important. Also I only use my t2i a few times a year so I dont care how long it takes to arrive. Some of us dont need instant gratification

I shoot Canon, and have gotten the opportunity to play with (and fall in love with...) my friend's Canon 17-55 f/2.8. If I had an extra grand to throw around, I'd strongly consider picking one up to replace my 17-40L (I don't intend on going FF anytime soon).

However, my other friend owns a Sigma 17-50 f/2.8, and despite the great IQ and relatively high built quality, he says it drives him NUTS. The reason? He says that the zoom ring and focus rings are Nikon-style, i.e. they rotate the opposite way from Canon lenses (just like how basically every dial on Nikon cameras rotates the opposite way from Canon's dials).

I thought he must be crazy...but now that I think about it, I can see that REALLY bothering me if I spend a lot of time with that lens. Granted, all I shoot with nowadays is primes w/ autofocus (28/50/85mm f/1.8 trio), and I only use the primes' MF rings and my 17-40L 5-10% of the time....but still, if I were to invest in a superior standard zoom lens, is paying $400+ more for the Canon over the Sigma worth it? What do you guys think?

There you go. Doesn't matter to me personally. You'd just go like "oh yeah the zoom ring goes the other way" and adjust. I'd do that for $20, let alone $400. Now of course, that's without considering resale values. The more you paid for it, the more you'll get back when you sell it. That is, assuming nothing breaks.

I'm sure both lenses are great, but if I were you I'd just stick with the primes that you shoot 90% of the time anyway.

Just curious: how often do you use the 50mm? I find my 50mm collecting dust after getting the 35mm f2. I like 28mm even more but I only have the f2.8 copy.

EXACTLY. I actually got a used Canon 50mm f/1.4 off eBay (terrible idea, by the way -- especially once the $300 deals started popping up....) and thought that the extra 2/3 stops of light would be worth the awkwardly-long-indoors focal length....Turns out, after the initial novelty of getting a shiny new lens wore off, the only time I used the 50mm f/1.4 was on my 35mm film cameras. My 28mm f/1.8 basically lives on my 7D (though I'm sorely, SORELY tempted to get one of those shiny new Sigma 35mm f/1.4 lenses....)

Everyone hates on the 28mm f/1.8 online, and I'll admit that it doesn't have the best bokeh....but it's loads better than the 35mm f/2 bokeh btw, and has legit USM (unlike the 50mm f/1.4's pseudo-USM, or the noisy 35mm f/2 and 50mm f/1.8 [both of which I love to death -- I'm just a USM addict I think]).

And to top it all off, the focus ring on the lens broke recently. I picked up a set of #00 and #000 screwdrivers off Amazon, and have been meaning to fix it myself....but honestly, part of the reason I haven't gotten around to it is that I just don't need the lens....

Sigh, buyer's remorse. Maybe it'll come in handy if I ever go FF.

(Also, regarding the Sigma 17-50mm....yeah, I guess I'll just stick to my 17-40L, hah)
