For 9 yrs old and family, Why not in San Diego:

Disney Land
Universal Studio
Santa Monica Pier
Downtown & 3rd st. Promenade, Santa Monica
Lego Land
Sea World
Safari Park
San Diego Zoo
La Jolla ...

At least 7 days

nothing really in Northern CA for kids. All parks and attractions are in SO CA.

I could go on and on for days about all the amazing things California has to offer. But California is huge so, the real question is: what activities does your family enjoy? If you are looking for attractions and beach time then I second the suggestion to visit southern California and visit San Diego, with some day trips to Orange County.

If you are an outdoors-y family then I suggest Northern California since some of my favorite spots are up there. But it will probably still be pretty cold.

I wouldn't say that the San Francisco area isn't kid friendly, there is definitely a lot to see and do since it is a city, but again, it all depends on what you are looking for.


Do you enjoy going to the theater and shows? Museums? Zoos? Hiking? Beach and water activities? Shopping? Historical sites? All of the above? Hopefully your trip will be a blast! We'll keep the suggestions coming once we hear about your interests

Southern California and "Greater Los Angeles" area.

You can do a weekend drive to San Francisco if you want. 6 hour drive/1 hr flight.

day 1-3 LA, Hollywood, Universal Studios,Beaches
day 3-6 Anaheim (Disneyland) San Diego (SD Zoo, Sea world, lego land)
Days 7-10 - San Francisco/Las Vegas

Like the people have mentioned, southern california would definitely be better for you and your child.

If you do fly down to So Cal, there are many airports to look at, so you can find the best price.

Orange County (SNA) is closest to Disneyland.
Los Angeles (LAX) more centralized, closer to downtown, beaches, santa monica, universal
Burbank (BUR) smaller, further out, close to hollywood, warner bros studios
Ontario (ONT)

Rush hour traffic in LA is usually between 3-7pm, Lunch hours 10am-12pm are also slow, but bearable.

Also look at citypass.com for great deals on attractions. I got tickets to Disneyland, sea world and universal studio for $300/person.
