I don't mean to start a debate...and I know Hollywood elitest have be seen drinking coconut water...but...why? I saw an interview with the two guys that started the trend and the reporter said..."kind of tastes like dirty sock water".
Recession smeshion...I only drink my water from coconuts. Hmmm...gives me an idea...maybe I'll start a watermelon water company.
Wish such healthy drinks became widely available everywhere in the US too. It's true that US only offers you unhealthy beverage options pretty much anywhere you go, people are embarrassed to ask for water which is seen as if you're trying to save money, the system actually is designed over drinking soda with everything at most places.
Tropical countries in Asia & South America have been drinking coconut water for thousands of years like green tea for it's great health benefits
taste MUCH better fresh from young white/green coconuts instead of the pasteurized stuff you find in the paper boxes (though the boxed stuff is better than soda/juice)
--fresh young white/green coconuts are 70 cents to 90 cents each in Asian stores but are also found in Whole Foods & Trader Joes & Mother's Market (but 2x to 3x as expensive than in Asian stores)
they stay fresh for 3-4 weeks refrigerated & taste best chilled
Fresh young white coconuts range from 70 cents to $1.49 a coconut single or 70 cents to 99 cents by the box (9 in a box) in Asian markets & each has 11 to 16 ounces of coconut water so a much better deal than the processed tetrapacks.
Whole Foods, Mother's Market, & Sprouts have also started carrying fresh young white coconuts but they charge double the price of Asian markets ($2-$3 a coconut at Whole Foods/Mother's Market) & they get the same coconuts as 99 Ranch & H Mart --but at least there's always a Whole Foods everywhere nearby.
If you have a choice, coconuts from tropical SouthEast Asia like Thailand are the best & sweetest,Maylasia, Phillpiines --Mexico is the least sweet.
You can also get the canned coconut water like C20 as well as 16 oz cans made in Thailand at 99cents & dollar stores too (not as good as fresh coconut but better than the processed tetrapacks)
The quickest (UNDER 4 SECONDS) & easiest way to open a fresh young white/green coconut easily
1) set coconut on table
2) making 4 chops with the corner square edge of a large knife, making a square pattern on the top of the coconut -imagine a square on the top saying "Peace, Love, Happiness, Sex" (haha)
3) then prying the top off, insert straw & use a spoon to eat the healthy delicious soft coconut flesh afterwards -
4) YouTube demonstrations https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sfo5BYR9yE0 & https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1HqVMYCr8MU
