My kids aren't in 6th, 7th, and 8th grades and we're not allowing them to "drink" at home - we're giving them a sip of a beer we already have open. Those are two very different things.

I'm simply pointing out that even small amounts (a sip?) of alcohol can possibly be detrimental to the health of a child. I don't know how old your kids are, and I'm sure you have their best interest as the highest priority. The bottom line is that each parent must make a decision of how they will raise their children according to their preferences and their values, and they must be prepared to accept whatever consequences there may be resulting from those decisions, whether those decisions include exposure to alcohol early in life, or a strict forbidding of any exposure to alcohol at all while in the parent's household (my choice).

The parent in the OP IMHO made the wrong decision, but she's probably telling the judge "it was only a small toke, nothing different than giving the child a small sip like everyone does"....

No disagreement here. I'm prepared to face any consequences for my allowing my children a sip of my beer. There are no legal consequences for that in my state and I'm comfortable that the tiny amounts they're ingesting aren't going to negatively affect their development any more than riding a roller coaster will.

I thought she said she realized that what she did was wrong; i.e. she wouldn't be trying to justify it. She screwed up (like we all do) and if she truly recognizes that what she did was stupid, she probably won't be doing it again. Hence I don't see the need to throw the book at her/take her kids away/etc (I'm not saying you're advocating any of these btw). According to the news article, the child's father was growing and manufacturing a controlled substance in the house, so the child has been exposed to that environment for possibly his entire life, and if not, at least as long as it has taken to prepare and grow the current crop, which suggests that he has been in that environment for a considerable amount of time.

What other stupid mistakes have been made in the past, and what potential stupid mistakes are in store for the child in the future if preventative action is not taken?

How much time? The maximum allowed by law.

Where? In prison.

The goal? To punish her according to the law, and so that she is removed from the child's environment and so that she will not be in a position to contribute detrimentally to the child's welfare.

The problem, at least as far as I see it, is that you are willing to throw the book at her based on a *lot* of conjecture and assumptions on your part:

Vancouver, British Columbia: Children residing in homes where marijuana is cultivated do not suffer from adverse health effects at any greater rate than do comparable children in cannabis-free environments, according to a study in press in the International Journal of Drug Policy.

A pair of investigators with the University of British Columbia, School of Social Work compared the household, family and individual characteristics of 181 children found living in homes with cannabis grow operations in two regions in British Columbia, Canada.

Data was collected on site regarding the physical characteristics of the homes, the health characteristics of the children residing in the homes, and the adolescents' prescription drug history. Investigators also compared the rates of the subjects' prescription drug use with that of a group of children from the same geographic areas.

Researchers reported "no significant difference between the health of the children living in cannabis grow operations and the comparison group of children, based on their prescription history and their reported health at the time."

They concluded: "The findings of this study challenge contemporary child welfare approaches and have implications for both child protection social workers and the policymakers who develop frameworks for practice. ... Although there is little argument that the physical hazards found in cannabis grow-operations pose a risk to children and adults living in the homes, the associated health risks are not as clear. Policymakers involved in establishing frameworks and protocols for responding to these unique child welfare cases must consider the absence of clinical evidence to indicate these children are unwell and whether there are grounds for child welfare intervention."
