I've had this lens for over a couple of years now and use it as my general purpose lens on my D80. Its a very handy lens and I've taken thousands of pics both outdoors and indoors. I think I paid about $100 to $150 more at that time.
It certainly would be nice to have a faster lens such as the 70-200 f2.8, but I just can't spend the money at this time.
Probably clearing out the last of the old inventory. The model that replaces it has the same range but is smaller and lighter. This one has some heft to it when compared to it's competitors.
That said, it has built in optical stabilization and is an excellent value in a superzoom. I've taken some very nice shots with mine, which I paid $150 more for it. It's a great carry only one lens solution when you don't want to bring all your gear. I found the focusing to be quieter and images sharper than the Tamron 18-270 PZD. It doesn't hunt around at all like the Tamron did on my camera.
