By the way, just looked at the actual sizes.

3-cup = 12oz. so unless you have really tiny cups, it will be more like 1.5 cups.
8-cup = 34oz. so about 4 cups.

In for a 3-cup since I probably would only drink one cup at a time, and you can't leave the coffee sitting in the french press for very long without it getting bitter.

For anyone interested in a French press with no plastic parts, check out the La Cafetiere presses, available on Amazon [amazon.com]. Not too expensive either.

I've been using an Aeropress for 5yrs and love it. Much easier to clean than a French press and it won't break. If you want a more French press like coffee, you can easily make your own mesh filter for the Aeropress or buy one already made.

My Bodum's filter is like the freiling. I never even knew there were silicone ones.

I don't know if it's true or not, but I don't think you can just dump coffee grinds into the sink, so cleanup is a hassle sometimes. I usually use a paper towel to dump the grinds into, and you have to clean the filter/glass itself since all the coffee oils gets up in there.

The coffee is good though. Tastes so much better than paper filtered coffee. I wish they had self cleaning french presses. Also, I wish more places served French Pressed coffee.

Anyways, I still hate these mediocre Bodums deals on the front page.

I don't find the cleanup to be that cumbersome. Why not dump the ground in the garbage can or even outside for compost? I only give the mesh filter a good cleaning once a week or so. In between I just give it a good rinse. It's fine to dump a bit in the sink (not the full load) if you have a disposal.

Highly recommend their products. If the stovetop espresso maker is available, get it. Looks like the Santos is a great price here, wish I could justify buying it.

You need to add preheated water just like a french press. At work we have these water jug dispensers that can heat water pretty fast. Also we got some huge coffee makers that have hot water in them.

After breaking a glass french press, I refused to buy another esp. since replacement glass is basically the same price as a new press. So after researching, I went with a LaCafetiere double walled, insulated stainless steel press from Macys for about $65. Expensive upfront purchase but I'll never worry about breaking it so it's cost efficient for me. I'm with you kalrith, fresh pressed coffee for the rest of my life! ;-) And to complement my purchase, I bought a stainless steel chefs choice electric tea kettle, best kettle I've ever had - piping hot water in couple minutes AND it automatically turns off!
